Summary: Hollywood Oscars' Campaigns come with a hefty cost, often exceeding $25 million and reaching as high as $100 million for major studios like Netflix. Additionally, the event draws approximately 20 million viewers, yielding substantial advertising revenues for networks. The campaigns, resembling political strategies, are centered around three pillars: public relations, events/screenings, and advertising. Public relations involve working with reporters, staging events, and securing interviews to create buzz around the film. Events and screenings aim to ensure that Academy members watch the movie, with various tactics employed to engage and garner support. Advertising, the most expensive pillar, involves significant spending on trade magazines, newspapers, and social media platforms.

With all of the contests in our industry starting to bubble to the surface (after the start of the Winter Festival Circuit); I figured I'd bring this example back to the fore (because examples can have enduring meaning depending on the context). This highlights a very similar disconnect (between the tech and business enclaves of the tech sector) that I see to the entertainment industry. The creatives will argue it's about the content on the page, but if it was about the content on the page; there wouldn't be any studios or streaming services; and everything would be a book (...period). It's about execution; Hollywood (as a verb) is in the execution business (also...period); and these executives (as hard as it is for creatives to fathom) have limited resources (in both time, and money) to deploy to endeavors; so...the real goal here is yes...to get them to invest in YOU (versus competitors...) But there's a gem even here still...because really; here's how the play-by-play typically goes... The Pitch Presentation 📋 : 1: Script that's "good" (everyone competing with you for the attention of executives and companies, also all have a script that they think is good...good enough to be up there competing with you for the attention of the tastemakers) ☑ 2: Attachments (which everyone in this business also has...everyone knows that actor from that show that they see at Starbucks or the actor that they see at the gym on Thursdays that they can loosely 'attach' to their project) ☑ So there's no COMPETITIVE advantage with any of those things, if other people have them ("you have that...!?, oh well...so do I...") The Real Competitive Advantage : 3 : The Budget and Schedule ( 📊 + 🗓 ) That gets down to the brass tacks of the actual work itself (the comparison being everyone has nice concept art, but the blueprints are wrong / everyone has a nice paint job on their car at the car show; but let's take a look at the engine...); and highlights that you have your thinking cap on regarding the most important part of this whole process (which isn't making it...people make media on their phones every day...it's rightful distribution...); and that you can talk about it effectively. Even if your competitors have a budget and schedule done; typically it's the 'budget' (numbers thrown on a page with no context...therefore they have no meaning; and are legally and strategically useless) and 'schedule' (another thrown together document usually); so they can only compete with you in name only (and they won't survive the 'microscope test' I talked about in a previous post... That's the competitive advantage you need... ...Period.

As engineers we can find ourselves in analysis paralysis - trying to optimize every aspect of the situation. Our course teaches you how to take a much more interactive approach, taking decisive steps towards your future without stressing about whether they are 100% correct. A career isn't about making the perfect decision, it's about adapting to the current circumstances, then making the tweaks that change the long term trajectory one step at a time.
Pitch a product in 90 seconds... This week's improv challenge! Our product - Lettuce Milk?!? With all the alternatives to actual milk out there, how do we distinguish ours from the competition... Maybe my lack of actual marketing experience helped me in this one... I didn't know. But what I do know is that when you're given a deadline, you pull out all the stops to get it done... and there's no time for the inner critic to tell you how terrible your ideas are! Enjoyed this challenge! It forced me to roll with whatever was said before and build upon it, forcing me to suspend judgement during the creative process! Silvia and I came up with something (good?), and in the process we built upon the trust and support of our scene partner to entertain the audience. I'm already looking forward to my next performance on April 16th!

As I reflect on 2023, a standout moment was crafting the 50th episode of 'Big Bites.' I delved into an enriching farm tour experience by Touring Guyana, a departure that truly encapsulates the evolution of my production skills. The journey doesn't end here; in 2024, I am committed to sustaining this elevated standard of content. Join me in embracing growth and exploration. https://lnkd.in/eMFnibyy

As we inch closer and closer to holidays and family time, many of us comms pros will undoubtedly be asked (as we are every year, it seems) "what is it that you do exactly?" If you want a great movie to help explain it to your friends and family without having to do so yourself, watch the movie Flamin' Hot on Hulu. It's pretty much got it all - A rags to riches story, marketing, PR, personal branding - plus all of the warm and fuzzies don't hurt either. 😉 https://lnkd.in/gJVWZBEy Frito-Lay #Flaminhot #cheetos #PR #marketing #innovation
