📹 Virtual meetings are a staple in today's work environment, but poor communication in these settings can lead to unnecessary misunderstandings and even resentment after the cameras switch off. Recently, Leslie Perlow's research shed light on the complexities of digital interactions and offers us pathways to enhance remote collaboration. Back in my days at [Previous Company], I remember the initial struggle of adapting to remote meetings. It wasn’t just about dealing with technical glitches; it was more about losing the nuances of face-to-face interaction. How about you? Have you experienced a virtual communication mishap that left things awkward? Here are a few strategies from Perlow’s findings that can help: 1️⃣ **Set Clear Agendas:** Be explicit about the meeting’s purpose and what needs to be achieved. 2️⃣ **Encourage Active Participation:** Ensure everyone's voice is heard, which helps in reducing misinterpretations. 3️⃣ **Follow-Up:** A quick recap and a written summary post-meeting can save a lot of future headaches. What steps do you take to ensure effective communication in your virtual meetings? Share your tips below or a story where clear communication saved the day! #RemoteWork #TeamCommunication #DigitalCollaboration #Leadership

Who interrupts most frequently, and who gets interrupted most often in hybrid meetings? Hint: It's not mostly about gender, race, or participant location "...when the person dialing in is junior to those in the physical room, 94% of the attempts to interrupt them are effective. But when the person dialing in is the most senior, only 16% of the attempts work." Fascinating article summarizing insights from recent research about meeting interrupters well worth the few minutes it will take you to read. H/T to Joe Allen for sharing. #virtualmeetings #hybridmeetings #interruptions #powerdifferential

In an interesting Fortune article, Dr. Gleb Tsipursky highlights a prevalent workplace issue: employees multitasking during virtual meetings. He points out that most multitasking is work-related, occurring in about 30% of virtual meetings. This behavior often arises from poorly designed meetings with vague agendas, excessive attendees, or unnecessary length. Tsipursky argues that the solution lies in improving meeting structures, not blaming employees. He advises fewer, more focused meetings and emphasizes asynchronous communication. His insights are particularly relevant to leaders aiming to enhance team efficiency and engagement. #multitaskingwhilemeeting #virtualmeetingtips https://lnkd.in/g5tyK9wA

Leslie Thomas, Ph.D. our Chief Psychometric Officer, shared invaluable insights from the recent ATP conference session on mastering the art of meetings in today's digital-first world. 🚀 Navigating the New Normal: Mastering Remote & Onsite Meetings in a Digital-first World 🌏 Last week at the ATP conference, I had the pleasure of joining a Peas-in-the-Pod session led by Zach Irwin M.S., ICE-CCP and Steven Hirsch, which offered rich insights into the evolving dynamics of workplace meetings. Below are my key takeaways and wisdom from the session: 💻 Remote Meetings - Keeping engagement high while mitigating distractions. 1. Advantages: Flexibility, diverse participation, cost savings. 2. Challenges: Distractions, lower engagement. 3. Strategies for Success: ➡ Strong facilitation skills to keep the energy and engagement high. ➡ Schedule optimally across time zones. Avoid early mornings and late nights to maximize participation. ➡ Short, focused sessions to ease Zoom fatigue. ➡ Use asynchronous tools when appropriate to minimize actual meeting time. ➡ Periodically engage all attendees to promote balanced participation. ➡ Leverage the chat feature to encourage quieter participants to contribute and to facilitate the easy exchange of detailed information. 🏢 Onsite Meetings: Reviving the Classics. Although onsite meetings excel in promoting unparalleled engagement and collaboration, they're not without their shifts. The new trend? Meetings are stretching out as participants favor shorter workdays 🕛 🏢 💻 Hybrid Meetings: Best of Both Worlds. Hybrid formats merge the strengths of remote and onsite. Having two facilitators helps ensure equal engagement from all participants. 🌎 Universal Meeting Wisdom: ➡ Begin with neutral icebreakers (e.g., favorite ice cream flavor?) vs. ones that may put participants on the spot (e.g., share something unique about yourself). ➡ Call on the participants by name. Whether remote, onsite, or hybrid, the secret to success in our current era hinges on meticulous planning, adaptability, and the finesse of facilitation. Let’s navigate these changes together, transforming every meeting into a chance for meaningful connection and growth. #RemoteWork #OnsiteMeetings #HybridWorkplace #MeetingTips #PostCovidWork #Leadership #engagement

Has remote or hybrid working changed the way your team operates? Is it disrupting productivity and workflow? One tip for improving engagement in hybrid meetings: ↗ Let your strongest speakers take control Did you know that '54% of all meetings are hosted by just 10% of employees'? Some of your colleagues will naturally engage your team through their tone, their actions, and their ability to tell a story. To make your meetings more productive, consider allowing natural speakers ,who are happy to do so, take the lead. Not only will it improve engagement, but it will improve their ability to present numbers and communicate to the wider team.

Virtual meetings have become the standard for global and hybrid team communication, but what happens when the call ends? Participants who are in the same room keep talking—and the tone of those conversations can dramatically impact team dynamics over time, says new research. Think of the Zoom screen or the conference call as a theater, says Harvard Business School Professor Leslie Perlow, building on the foundational work of sociologist Erving Goffman. “You’re on the frontstage, and that’s for all the world to see,” she says. “And then there’s the behind the scenes, where you take off the mask, and what do you unveil?” We cannot overlook the fact that remote teams are as engaged as they might be, and strong communication is key. Of course, strong (and effective) communication is always key, as we know through our training at X5 Management. Are your virtual meetings draining team productivity? It's time to take control and transform virtual collaboration. Here's an action plan: 1. Implement the "Meeting Decision Tree": • Before scheduling, ask: Is this meeting necessary? • Consider alternatives: Email, chat, or shared documents • If a meeting is crucial, determine the most effective format 2. Combat "Video Fatigue": • Limit video calls to 30 minutes when possible • Schedule breaks between meetings • Encourage "camera-off" time for mental recharge 3. Adopt BEANs (Behavior Enablers, Artifacts, and Nudges): • Behavior Enablers: Assign roles (e.g., timekeeper, note-taker) • Artifacts: Use visual aids to maintain engagement • Nudges: Send pre-meeting materials to boost productivity 4. Optimize Meeting Structure: • Start with a clear agenda and objectives • Use the "Two-Pizza Rule" - limit attendees to those who two pizzas can feed • End with actionable next steps and clear ownership 5. Foster a Culture of Efficient Meetings: • Lead by example - respect time limits and meeting-free blocks • Encourage feedback on meeting effectiveness • Celebrate teams that innovate in virtual collaboration #VirtualMeeting #RemoteWorkProductivity #TimeManagement #TeamCollaboration
