Gutted from a sporting perspective about England’s RWC near miss, but can’t help feeling it’s a good result for the “business”. 3 reasons: 1. A one-off success too soon can be deceptive. We know we have long-term problems - leadership, talent in some positions, Premiership finances - and a lucky (rain-assisted) win might have let us kid ourselves they’re not there. 2. Psychologically, we feel - perhaps somewhat illusorily - that England Rugby plc is still in the top tier. More of a confidence-building end to our tournament than getting thrashed by the All Blacks. 3. Learning value for 2027 - the younger members of the squad on whom we now build will come home with the motivation to stretch for the extra level and the knowledge that it’s within their reach. Roll on Australia 2027!

If you care about young people singing, with all the benefits it brings, you’ll be astonished to hear that choirs are excluded from a valuable tax break which is given to orchestras. That ought to change. Read more and help if you can. https://lnkd.in/eeeZYGHj

My wonderful daughter has just completed a tough 100km walk in the Brecon Beacons for CoppaFeel!, the brilliant breast cancer charity. Please make those tired legs and sore feet worthwhile by joining in the last round of donations to get her to her target. https://lnkd.in/e_vF55EF

My amazing older daughter is doing a major trek this summer to raise money for CoppaFeel!, an amazing charity which helps young adults recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer early on. She’s walking 100km up, down and around the Brecon Beacons, along with around 200 other people, and aiming to raise £2250. To secure her place on the trek, she needs to raise another £475 in the next week. If you haven't already, I’d be so grateful if you felt you could chip in towards the target, no matter how much it is. Thank you https://lnkd.in/gUr3AWcJ

If you have been watching the ITV dramatisation of the Post Office scandal and wondering how no journalist ever properly investigated it, I’ll point out that Private Eye has been covering it repeatedly in depth for many years. I wonder sometimes where the truth is to be found, and I’m sure it’s not on the politically-neutered BBC or in the journalist-impoverished papers, so PE is one of the few places I rely on. Over the years, they beat everyone to stories like Robert Maxwell, Jeffrey Archer and dodgy, overpriced PPE way ahead of others. (By the way, they are already lining up the next one - the “public-private” Teesside freeport is looking like a cracker.) https://lnkd.in/gQ4SiTP8

National Youth Choirs Christmas Appeal 2023 I continue to be amazed by what this charity does for and with talented young singers. If there were a singing World Cup, they would make the final! We just need more funds to reach those with less access to music and less ability to meet the cost of participation. Please donate if you can. https://lnkd.in/eSWG8yrr

Is it just me or is #linkedin losing its way a bit? Over recent months, a higher and higher proportion of connection requests and messages are from people I don't know, often touting services. Some pretty obvious bot-generated profiles starting to appear. Is this now just Twitter with longer words and nicer profile pics? Shame if it is going astray because, on the flipside, there's stuff developing that I really like, such as recruitment and self-service CPD.

I’m thrilled that we are now officially part of Renaissance Learning. Looking forward to two great businesses coming together to create the next generation of tech solutions to support great teaching and personalised learning. I’ll be sticking around for a while to see the transition through, but I’m delighted that Mary de Sausmarez, who has already driven such success for us, is now Managing Director of GL.
