Take a minute to read the article, realistic expectations are absolutely key when considering a career in the trades. Solid job security? Maybe, low initial pay, absolutely, potential for making solid income after many years? potentially. I'd love to hear from others in the trades, on your experience. From a journeyman plumber: "When you start out your apprenticeship, you earn around $31,200 per year. As you work your way up through that apprenticeship (before getting licensed), you might make it to around $50K per year. Once you're licensed, you'll be at $30 per hour ($62K per year), if you're in a high-paying state like CA, MA, or NY. From there, it's a slow climb to $85K per year. The one exception to this rule is if you're in a busy union with a lot of work. Should people consider becoming plumbers, electricians, etc? Absolutely, but we need to set realistic expectations. You don't get rich in the trades overnight, as your post implies. I know more guys in my trade capped at around $65K per year than those making six figures. There's a serious problem with white collar workers being "advocates" for us, when all you end up doing is using hyperbolic language that doesn't reflect reality nor prepare kids considering pursuing a trade. They romanticize our profession, but are so disconnected with it that all they can rely on are statistics which misinform or mislead. "

FEATURE ARTICLE: Changing the Dialogue: Making the Trades More Accessible by Michael Ridler. The most recent projections by the Canadian government estimate that by 2028, we will see 700,000 skilled tradespeople leave our industry. The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum notes we need to add 75,000 new apprentices every single year to meet the demand for journeypersons in Red Seal trades, yet many trades will not meet these goals. Data from 2020 showed the largest decline in year-over-year apprentices since industry data was first collected in 1991. Only 55,455 new apprentices were registered in 2020 — a 28.5 per cent drop over the previous year. This is part one of a three part series dedicated to elevating and discussing the skilled trades in Canada. My goal is clear: To not only highlight the challenges faced by this sector but also to pave the way for its improvement and growth. This will include feedback from those not only on the tools but also the college professors, and most uniquely, from young people who are graduating or recently graduated and their experience in entering the trades.

In Canada, skilled trades workers are increasingly recognized as integral to the economy, yet the sector faces several challenges and opportunities. The Canadian government is actively promoting careers in skilled trades due to demographic shifts and high retirement rates, which are fueling the demand for more workers in this sector. The Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy, backed by nearly $1 billion in annual investment from the government, aims to build a skilled, inclusive, and productive trades workforce. This includes financial support for apprentices in the Red Seal trades, involving grants, loans, tax credits, and other forms of assistance. One of the major challenges is the shortage of skilled trades workers. Over the next decade, Canada needs to recruit hundreds of thousands of new workers in trades like construction to replace retirees and meet new demand. However, participation rates among younger workers are low, partly due to misconceptions about skilled trades jobs being low-paying or overly physically demanding. Additionally, there's a lack of awareness among high school students about opportunities in the trades, and training programs, especially apprenticeships, can be hard to come by. The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum highlights the need for over 122,000 new journeypersons in the Red Seal trades from 2022 to 2026, with key trades including industrial electricians, painters and decorators, and welders. The construction industry alone needs to recruit 299,200 new workers by 2032. Moreover, the Apprenticeship Service, introduced in the 2021 federal budget, helps first-year apprentices in eligible Red Seal trades connect with employment opportunities, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises. This initiative provides financial incentives to employers to hire new apprentices, especially from equity-deserving groups. Training and mentorship are also being emphasized, with programs like the Union Training and Innovation Program and the Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness program supporting unions and other organizations in helping key groups succeed in trades. Efforts are also underway to address challenges faced by immigrants in getting their credentials recognized in Canada. Furthermore, the rapid technological changes in industries such as Alberta's energy sector and the automotive sector are requiring continuous upskilling among current journeypersons, highlighting the need for adaptable and evolving training programs. Efforts to include underrepresented groups, like indigenous communities and women, are also noteworthy. For example, in British Columbia, the Electrical Joint Training Committee has been successful in moving multiple First Nations cohorts through its Red Seal electrician training pathway. Promoting skilled trades as viable and rewarding career paths is crucial for addressing these challenges and ensuring a robust skilled trades workforce for Canada's future.

We've experienced this firsthand: tradespeople are having to cope with a shortage of skilled workers while juggling more requests for their services. In fact, a national shortage of tradespeople is expected by as early as 2030. The lack of skilled workers is an industry-wide issue but a report from Kingfisher (see below), estimates how individual trades might be affected. The three trades predicted to be affected the most are: - Electricians – 54,387 workers. - Carpenters and joiners – 53,691 workers. - Plumbing and heating engineers – 51,524 workers Why the shortage? Quite simply, an ageing workforce is the main concern for the industry. There are not enough young people considering a career as a tradesperson, in fact, according to Kingfisher's report, half of the people surveyed said they’ve never considered a career in the trades and only 13% said they were encouraged at school to consider a career as a tradesperson. What can be done? The Government are already putting schemes in place to try to resolve this shortage. The report outlines the areas the government could focus on to help solve the issue are as follows: 1. Career advice in schools to encourage young people to take up a trade career. 2. Improved hiring incentives to support SMEs in taking on, training, and retaining apprentices. 3. There are no other directions on how to apply. This is a job in the Construction field that starts Apprentices at $18/hr and pays $40/hr on the top end. Here's an example of a skill that you can't teach.

Skilled tradespeople – from carpenters to plumbers to electricians – are in high demand, yet there simply aren't enough skilled workers to meet the needs of the growing construction industry. So, what's causing this shortage? 1. Aging Workforce: Many seasoned tradespeople are reaching retirement age, and there aren't enough young professionals entering the field to fill their shoes. 2. Perception vs. Reality: There's a misconception that a career in the trades is less desirable or prestigious than pursuing a traditional college education. In reality, the trades offer lucrative opportunities for those with the right skills and work ethic. 3. Lack of Training and Apprenticeships: Access to quality training programs and apprenticeships is limited, making it difficult for aspiring tradespeople to acquire the necessary skills and experience. This is a problem we all need to tackle. Get shop class back in schools. Encourage more kids to look at careers in the trades. And most importantly, show your tradespeople some respect.

Today's job market reveals a significant shift in career paths as more individuals embrace skilled trades over traditional desk jobs. According to recent data, construction trades like roofing, plumbing, and painting flourish with minimal entry requirements, paid apprenticeships, and robust union support. Key Highlights: High Demand: Nearly 490,000 job openings annually in construction trades over the next decade. Competitive Pay: Median wage of $25 per hour, with many roles surpassing wages of degree-required jobs. The average age of an electrician is 45 years and older. 20% of electricians are expected to reach retirement age within 10 years. More are leaving the industry than coming into it.
