Sure, ~$4,000 isn't a huge investment to prepare a newly promoted executive. But, let's look at the cost of NOT investing the $4k to prepare your new executive for his/her new senior role. Suppose the newly promoted executive doesn't work out. And, it takes 12-18 months to find that out. Now you have to spend additional $$$ on filling that role, looking for another candidate. And, you'll most likely spend an additional 25% - 30% of the executives annual salary to a recruiting firm to find that outside candidate. Then there's the (MUCH larger) cost of disruption - with initiatives, processes, operations, and critical decisions being delayed and the ripple-effect on your business. So, think of that $4,000 as a mini insurance policy to avoid much larger costs later. And, more importantly, doesn't that newly promoted executive deserve every chance to succeed? Secret CFO is extra crispy this week. “One way to retain people is with money. This can be effective in the short term but is almost always the wrong play in the long term. You need to pay your people well. But if you are consistently paying above market there is an issue. The non-financial components of your offer are likely below market.” What’s your value proposition as a leader? I get after our sales team for competing on price because it means we aren’t differentiated in our offering. It’s similar with people. They’re selling their time to you. What’s your value prop? When you become a leader your job isn’t to simply manage but be a force multiplier. You need to be cognizant of how you show up, and you need to show up and coach A good finance partner will speak truth to your BP. Every good finance leader needs a HR BP that will speak truth to you. I have one of those.
