On February 29th (the rarest day!), we commemorate #rarediseaseday. A disease is considered rare when it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people and can come with challenges including this list, courtesy of RareDiseaseDay.org. 🟣 The lack of scientific knowledge and quality information on the disease often results in a delay in diagnosis. 🟡 The need for appropriate quality health care engenders inequalities and difficulties in access to treatment and care. This often results in heavy social and financial burdens on patients. 🟢 Owing to the broad diversity of disorders and relatively common symptoms which can hide underlying rare diseases, initial misdiagnosis is common. In addition, symptoms differ not only from disease to disease, but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease. 🟣 Research needs to be international to ensure that experts, researchers and clinicians are connected. This is all to say, it's often challenging for families and individuals to navigate the medical and social complexities that accompany a rare disease. We are proud to serve children with rare diseases in our programming, and have cherished the ability to focus on their individual development while forming close, collaborative relationships with their families.

May is #LymeDiseaseAwarenessMonth. If you’ve ever found a tick on yourself or your pet, you probably still remember that feeling – part ‘crawly, itchy, ewwww’ and part ‘oh no, maybe that tick was carrying Lyme disease.’ With nearly half a million diagnosed cases annually in the US alone, faster and more accurate diagnosis is crucial. Early intervention can prevent the debilitating effects of Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome. George Mason University's College of Science and George Mason University College of Public Health have secured a $1.1 million grant to develop a urine test for Lyme disease. This research, led by School of Systems Biology professors Alessandra Luchini and Lance Liotta, along with Dean of the College of Public Health, Melissa Perry, aims to improve the detection, diagnosis, and treatment, combating the rise of tick-borne illnesses. Rare Disease Day is a worldwide initiative that aims to promote fairness in healthcare, social opportunities, and diagnosis and treatment access for individuals who have rare diseases. On February 28 (or 29, in leap years), which is the rarest day of the year. Rare Disease Day is commemorated annually. Some of the universal challenges faced by those living with a rare disease include delayed diagnosis due to limited scientific knowledge and information, inequities in accessing quality healthcare leading to social and financial burdens, common misdiagnosis caused by overlapping symptoms, variation in symptoms among patients with the same disease complicating diagnosis, need for international research collaboration among experts and clinicians. Rare Disease Day offers a focus and enthusiasm that helps local, national, and international rare illness advocacy activity move forward.
