Just a few short years after national outrage over the murder of George Floyd prompted corporate America to reevaluate its commitment to DEI and pledge change, a political “war on woke” is pushing employers to abandon the policy of inclusion. Phil Lyman's misguided attempt to pin the tragic bridge collapse in Baltimore on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives is both reckless and baseless. By scapegoating DEI, Lyman demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of the incident and the true purpose of diversity efforts. It's evident that Lyman and his cohorts are exploiting DEI as a convenient scapegoat to further their political agendas, regardless of the harm it may cause or the lack of factual basis behind their claims. DEI shouldn't be reduced to a partisan talking point; it's about fostering inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. Dismissing DEI as merely a buzzword or as 'anti-conservative' overlooks its potential to bring about positive societal change. Knee-jerk reactions like Lyman's hastily crafted social media post only serve to derail meaningful conversation. Instead of engaging in empty rhetoric, individuals should take the time to educate themselves about DEI and recognize its significance in creating a fairer world for all. Lyman's struggle to substantiate his social media tirade only underscores the emptiness of these political attacks on DEI. It's disheartening to witness elected officials stoop to such shameful tactics, even going so far as to blame their own social media teams for spreading baseless claims. Rather than engaging in political point-scoring, our collective focus should be on understanding the underlying causes of the bridge collapse and implementing concrete measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Let's not allow politics to overshadow genuine dialogue and progress. I was happy to lend my voice to this USA News article to amplify the absurdity of Lyman's claims. Praying for all those impacted.
