Are you a film enthusiast? Do you know the difference between art and commercial films? The goal of any "commercial film" is to gain popularity, while "art film" gives stress on the portrayal of reality. It's an age-old debate that has slowly evolved into the concept of "Meaningful Cinema." Growing up, my family always supported art films over commercial ones. Both types of filmmaking require money, and filmmakers of both types want an average return of around 6-10% over around 2 years. However, the basic difference between the two is the focus on reality versus popularity. Let's keep the art vs. commercial debate alive and continue to appreciate "meaningful cinema." What's your take on this? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The Zellner Brothers Offer Advice to Indie Filmmakers https://ift.tt/VWZP69q I've been a fan of the Zellners since I had the chance to see Damsel premiere at Sundance in 2018, and they came onstage with a miniature horse that upstaged actors Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska. Others will probably know them best for their indie darling, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter. However you know them, they're back this year with another quirky story in Sasquatch Sunset, which was yet again a Sundance premiere, a film that follows a family of its titular creatures through a year of daily triumphs and tribulations. This one stars (if you believe it) Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg, who only speak in grunts and squeals. The film is very much slice-of-life, including the sometimes ugly details of being a creature on this crazy planet. We were glad to be able to hop onto Zoom with the Zellners ahead of the film's release. Take a journey into the woods and observe their expertise. Sasquatch Sunset | Official Red Band Trailer | Bleecker Street www.youtube.com Editor's note: The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity. No Film School: I've read that both Jesse and Riley were on board with this pretty quickly, but it is a very unique idea. So what I would love to ask you is how do you pitch an idea that's a little bit more unusual to investors or to get people on board? David Zellner: I think the most important thing is just with any project, but particularly this one is having a clarity of the tone, what you're trying to accomplish with it, and if it's a more conventional film, then you can use other films, pre-existing films as kind of comps for it. This one, its strength and weakness is we didn't have comps to rely on so much that were directly what we were trying to do. So it put a little more pressure on the script itself to help sell the tone, which was very specific in terms of this kind of mix of humor and pathos and making it clear that it's not a children's film, it's not a horror film, it's not a spoof, it's just its own singular tone. And so it was essential that we have a script that people could read it and know exactly what they were getting both, I mean for all across the board so the actors could trust taking a leap of faith with an unconventional project like this and feel that they were in good hands for the investors to know that they were making the same kind of movie that we were. And then for the crew as well. And that also makes our job a lot easier because then if everyone is dialed into the same kind of, if you're all trying to make the same movie and that is clear what the filmmakers are intending to do, then we don't have to micromanage as much. So you can give people certain boundaries of this sandbox to play in. NFS: The film is also shot so beautifully. So how did you all arrive at the visual style that you wanted for the film? Nathan Zellner: I think we kind of fans of that very naturalisti...

Three Creative Lessons From Making a James Bond Film It’s June 1961. Coproducers Harry Saltzman and Cubby Broccoli walk into a New York meeting room full of the top executives in the film industry — with no script and no star attached to their idea to make the first James Bond film. They faced impossible odds for getting a movie made. So what did they do? They didn’t just pitch a movie, they pitched an entire series. Here, we share three lessons from the Dr. No book, which takes readers inside the filming process, that you can apply to your next creative project. They include pitching over-the-top concepts, leaning into constraints, and being open to the idea you never saw coming: https://lnkd.in/eNdbYYQp

🎥 In an increasingly virtual film production scene, prop design remains one of the last strongholds of practical filmmaking, and as such is one of my favorites. 👍🏽 Check out this Containment Officer Night Vision mask I made to send chills down Hughie's spine in "The Control Room." 🥶 I love stuff like this, so if you've ever made or designed an awesome prop like this, comment below! I'd love to see it! #hollywoodhacks #DIYfilmmaking #behindthescenes
