We had the privilege of hosting ACC Southern California (Association of Corporate Counsel) to celebrate another successful year of the Diversity Internship Program! Now in its fourth year, this initiative offers law students an invaluable opportunity to gain insights and exposure to in-house practice. This past Wednesday, we welcomed 2024 interns, host companies, program alumni, and ACC SoCal Board Members to our offices for a special celebratory reception. During the summer, our firm held a Zoom webinar discussing OCI and resume tips (thanks Jennifer Romero and Elizabeth Sbardellati!) and also provided mentors who offered guidance on what it's like to practice in law firms. We are honored to have been part of this impactful initiative since its inception and look forward to many more years of fostering diversity in the legal profession. Early Careers I Learning and Development | Dual-Qualified Lawyer I Breast Cancer Awareness Month - I beat Breast Cancer
Our June Summer Interns finished last Friday - and prepared these tips for our July Summer Interns who started today! Law firm summer internships are intense - I hope these tips help. ———— Top Tips for Rocking Your Internship at Mayer Brown! Hey fellow interns! Are you ready to make the most of your time at Mayer Brown? Here are some insider tips that will help you shine: 1. No stress, just success! Remember, everyone at the firm is super nice and open to helping you out. So, don't fret if you're feeling overwhelmed. Take a deep breath and embrace the learning journey. You've got this! 2. Questions are your superpower! Don't be afraid to ask for guidance or clarification. Seriously, no one expects you to know everything right off the bat. However, instead of asking “what should I do” for everything, a better approach would be to suggest to your supervisor what is your proposed approach and see if s/he agrees! 3. Be the "Master of Proactivity"! Take the initiative on tasks, projects, and opportunities that come your way. Don't wait for things to happen—make them happen! Show your enthusiasm and eagerness to contribute. Trust us, it won't go unnoticed. 4. Embrace the learning curve! As an intern, you're here to learn, grow, and absorb as much knowledge as possible. So, be open to new experiences, challenges, and different areas of law. It's all part of your exciting journey into the legal world. #Summerinterns #Tipsforsuccess

Day 13: Mastering the Law School Balancing Act When I started law school, I thought juggling internships and classes would be a walk in the park. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t! Without a solid game plan, I quickly found myself on the fast track to burnout. Why Balance Matters Internships are your gateway to the real world of law. They help you build essential skills, expand your network, and give you a taste of what being a lawyer is really like. But let’s not forget: your academics are just as crucial. A stellar GPA is your foundation for future success. If you don’t strike the right balance, you risk falling short in both areas. How to Avoid My Mistakes Here’s how to keep your sanity while making the most of both worlds: 1️⃣ Master Time Management - Craft a Weekly Schedule: Block out time for classes, study sessions, and internship tasks. A clear structure helps you stay focused and less overwhelmed. - Prioritize Like a Pro: Use to-do lists or apps to keep track of what needs your attention first. 2️⃣ Communicate with Your Supervisors - Be Honest: Let your internship supervisors know about your school commitments. Most will appreciate your transparency and may adjust your workload. - Check In Regularly: Schedule catch-up meetings to discuss progress and any needed changes. 3️⃣ Know Your Limits - Don’t Overcommit: It’s tempting to say yes to every opportunity, but knowing when to say no is key. - Focus on What Matters: Choose internships and activities that align with your goals. 🔑 Pro Tip: Make Downtime Count Use those quiet moments at your internship or short breaks between classes wisely. A few minutes spent reviewing notes or getting ahead on assignments can make a big difference! Wrap-Up Finding the right balance between internships and law school is tough but totally doable with some smart strategies. Have you faced similar challenges? Let’s share tips and tackle this journey together! Sometimes we need a reason to meet up and sometimes we just don't! Something that started off as a one time thing with just a couple of us has now become a full blown event in our chamber. It is so heartening to see some of our earlier interns come back to dine with us with amazing updates of their professional achievements and their hopes, dreams and expectation for their future. Three out of the many in this photo will be joining the bar this year and I have no doubt they shall contribute handsomely to their chosen fields. Curiously, though they all came to do litigation internships with us, one is joining a corporate law practice, one is going in-house and one is sticking to litigation by joining us as a full time team member! So this dinner could be described as a welcome to saloni chordia who will be helping us reach new heights! From the left - Adv. Biswajeet Mukherjee (Linkedin does not let me tag him), Adv. Pulkit Tyagi, Shriya Tukaram Nandedkar, saloni chordia, your's truly, Adv. Rupal Shrimal, Anagha Pandit, Somdatta Maitra, Advocate Damini Joshi, Mann Agrawal and Soham Bapat. Ps: A lot of these guys connected with me for the first time on Linkedin! For those who could not make it, you know who you all are. You were missed! Onwards and upwards! #law #litigation #students #internship #lawchambers #futureleaders #connections #chamberdinner

As summer approaches, 1Ls and 2Ls are facing crucial decisions about summer associate programs or internships. With law firms scaling back on these opportunities, securing a post-graduation job has become more challenging. If you're a 1L or 2L without a summer placement lined up, here are some proactive steps to make your summer productive: ✔ Reach out to small law firms or solo practitioners expressing your interest in summer work. ✔ Contact the General Counsel of companies to inquire about intern positions within their legal departments. ✔ Explore study abroad programs specializing in law. ✔ Volunteer for legal non-profits and offer your services pro-bono. ✔ Investigate internship programs through your law school, potentially earning credit while working with local businesses. ✔ Approach your law school professors about assisting with research during the summer.

Reflecting on my journey through law school and internships, I've come to deeply appreciate the profound impact of cultivating friendships with peers who share this path. These connections go beyond mere networking; they are vital relationships that offer mutual understanding and emotional support. Law school and internships are filled with formidable challenges, from demanding coursework to navigating the intricacies of the professional world. Having friends who understand these challenges can make all the difference. Whether it's discussing complex assignments, celebrating successes or simply offering a supportive ear during stressful times, these friendships serve as essential pillars of support. After spending long hours in offices or classrooms, it's crucial to have friends with whom you can unwind and recharge. Whether it's grabbing dinner together, going for a walk or sharing a few laughs, these interactions are vital for maintaining balance and perspective amidst the demands of legal education and professional training. Sharing our triumphs and tribulations with friends who are on a similar journey helps us feel less isolated and strengthens our resolve to persevere. Together, we can navigate the challenges of law school and internships with greater resilience and camaraderie. To all fellow law students and interns, remember to invest in relationships that offer not only shared experiences but also genuine emotional support. #LawSchoolLife #InternshipJourney #FriendshipSupport

THIS IS A PERSONAL ACCOUNT Assistant District Attorney General - Trial attorney handling criminal cases. Opinions my own.
Law students, Those of you with internships have now completed, at least, a full month. Congratulations! Are you keeping a list of what you are doing? If not, do so. It will matter. Have you found a mentor? If so, awesome. It will matter. Have you discovered what you like and don't like about the job or the firm? Be honest. It will matter. I'm going to brag on our interns. They are all over it! As in curb-stomping it. They are eager to get into the action, jumping in when asked to, and showing up. They are part of the team, owning their work, making us better, and demonstrating that they have what it takes to be excellent trial lawyers. Crush July! It matters. #lawstudents
