🌍 Wind Power’s Waste Problem: A Challenge and an Opportunity for Innovation As wind energy grows, managing turbine blade waste has become a pressing issue. These blades, with a lifespan of up to 20 years, often end up in landfills, contributing to a mounting environmental challenge. By 2050, we could see 43 million tons of blade waste globally. However, this challenge presents an exciting opportunity for #innovation! Several projects are already tackling the issue of #recycling wind turbines: National Renewable Energy Laboratory (USA) has developed a recyclable turbine blade made from plant-based materials. These blades can be broken down and reused, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional fiberglass composites. Millions flow to carbon removal, but are we missing the bigger picture? Vaulted Deep's recent $58.3 million deal to remove 152,480 metric tons of CO2 raises eyebrows. While their biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS) technology shows promise, let's delve deeper and question the potential downsides of such large-scale financial commitments in the carbon removal market. The Allure of "Undo": BiCRS offers a seemingly simple solution: inject waste deep underground to permanently store CO2. This narrative can be seductive, potentially fostering a "business as usual" mentality. Companies may see carbon removal as a way to offset continued emissions, delaying crucial efforts to reduce them at the source. Where are the Incentives for Reduction? Focusing heavily on carbon removal can create a misplaced sense of security. It could weaken incentives for industries to transition to cleaner technologies and processes. True to the motto: Why invest heavily in reducing emissions if you can simply pay to "undo" them later? The Long Shadow of Uncertainty: While Vaulted Deep emphasises permanent storage, long-term risks remain. Leakage from underground formations and the unforeseen consequences of large-scale CO2 injection are areas requiring further investigation. I am wondering about the readiuness of the technology and it’s scalability. A Call for a Balanced Approach: Vaulted Deep's innovation deserves recognition, but it shouldn't overshadow the urgency of carbon reduction. We need a multi-pronged attack, with significant investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices, and energy efficiency. Nd we need these solutions in the Global North as well as in the Global South. Let's Talk: Huge financial deals in carbon removal are a double-edged sword. They offer a potential solution, but can we afford to be distracted from the real challenge – slashing emissions? Let's have a critical conversation about the role of carbon removal technologies within a comprehensive climate action plan. What are your thoughts? Unfortunately, most of the CDR methods being developed today are either skeptical, costly, non-scalable, or difficult to monitor. The least problematic method from an environmental perspective is often the most rejected from a business standpoint due to weak MRV. Burning dead trees and biomass and store/utilize the emitted gas is also questionable because it disrupts the carbon cycle. Preventing the decomposition of biomass to reduce CO2 emissions interferes with this natural process. By burning biomass, we deprive microorganisms of their food, negatively impacting nutrient cycling. In simpler terms, burning biomass reduces the nutrients available for current and future plants and trees. Ocean electrolysis methods fare no better. A single droplet of ocean water contains thousands of microorganisms. Running direct electricity strong enough to break chemical bonds will also kill these microorganisms and affect the ocean food web badly. These are just two examples highlighting why current CDR methods are questionable. Other methods might be less controversial but are either prohibitively expensive or not scalable to gigaton levels, based on current capabilities rather than optimistic projections pitched to investors/media. #CDR #CarbonRemoval #ClimateChange
