👀👀 So yes Lena Roland this got my attention! I just listened to this podcast and so should you. Thank goodness Thomas Kolster you were able to reframe the conversation by introducing the concept and construct of Sustainability in this conversation with WARC and Nick Asbury 1. I think many people who talk about Purpose should expand their understanding more broadly to the fields of sustainability, regeneration, ESG, well-being, social cause, equity and justice. All of these disciplines are interdependent elements to doing purpose well. 2. With respect to Thomas and Nick and WARC - the lack of using one specific word during the 30 minute podcast was surprising. The word in question is……… CULTURE. Brands and business are an inextricable part of culture. Hence, that informs aspirations, ambitions, beliefs, values etc etc. Therefore, in my not so humble opinion - a conversation about purpose, that omits the cultural context is something that I’d certainly love to come on and talk about! BUT actually folks such as Dr. Marcus Collins Dr. Anastasia Kārkliņa Gabriel Grant McCracken are infinitely more qualified as the preeminent cultural commentators around right now. 3. companies are inherently political. That’s why many of the companies that are referenced in the discussion have a Government Affairs department who spend most of their time in political corridors - advocating, and working with lobbyist to push their agenda forward. So my push back to Nick is that to infer that Patagonia was going too far and becoming an organization that lobbies is a fundamental misunderstanding of how business works in the UK, USA and many other countries. There is a direct correlation between business and politics and policies and laws- hence why purpose is a fundamental component of business being a force for good growth. 4. Also, I simply cannot fathom how Creativity is the ‘opposite’ of Purpose. To postulate that they are mutually exclusive has left me bamboozled, truly. I’ll talk more about that in a future post.
