Developing the Next Generation of Diverse Leaders in Real Estate & the Built Environment @ The Land Collective | Social Impact | Early Careers | DE&I
Happy September! Yes, there's a new edition of The Land Collective Beyond the Skyline newsletter out today - this time I'm talking about the industry's current approach to traditional career education. I think it's time to switch it up. I've always been more of a do-er. I like to crack on with things and try them out for myself, as its how I learn best. For those who are like me, career education can feel like a bit of a drag until you get your hands on something to do. What is the ROI on university career fairs and one-off career talks? Not just for the company but for the young person attending or listening? Let's create memorable experiences for them to engage, especially considering just how vocational a lot of the built environment sector is anyway! ___ 📨 My newsletter is aimed at employers, those who are invested in social impact across the real estate sector and career leaders at schools. Fortnightly on Fridays! -> https://lnkd.in/ePC_ajmH

Strategy 1: Invite prospective students to campus with career fairs. Campus events are an especially effective way to form relationships with prospective students. They offer the opportunity for students to see your institution, interact with faculty, ask questions, and engage with your resources firsthand. Not to mention that in a post-pandemic era, face-to-face connections make even more of an impact. Plenty of community colleges already host career fairs, where students can connect with representatives from local businesses and explore their career options. Marketing these events to prospective students lets them see firsthand the kind of relationships that your institution has built within the local job economy, and gives you a chance to show off your vocational programs and internship opportunities. Career fairs are valuable tools for students to explore career options, but physical limitations can restrict how many industries and businesses they get to experience. CareerPathway.com offers a virtual solution for businesses, schools, and communities. An idea that has been ruminating in my head as of late, is thinking through the pro and cons of community colleges concurrently hosting their open house event and career fair. If this is already happening, I hope someone in my network can share what institutions may be doing this. If it is not happening, I hope community colleges would consider doing so. This strategy can bring about several benefits, particularly in terms of workforce development, #community participation, and recruitment of post-traditional learners. By providing a platform for students to explore career opportunities and network with employers, community colleges can better prepare their students for the #workforce. This helps #students to explore different career paths, network with industry professionals, and gain valuable insights into the skills and qualifications required in the job market. Combining career fairs with open house events can enhance community participation. This dual event can attract not only prospective students but also local community members and employers. This increased involvement from the community can create valuable partnerships and collaborations, leading to more internship and job opportunities for students. Hosting career fairs on the same day as open house events can facilitate the recruitment of post-traditional learners. These students, such as working adults or returning students, often have specific career goals and may benefit greatly from networking opportunities offered at career fairs. By integrating career-focused activities into open house events, community colleges can attract and support these diverse learners. There are challenges that may arise from hosting career fairs alongside open house events. Coordinating two major events on the same day may require significant logistical planning and resources, which could strain the college's capacity, especially if they are already fiscally strapped or don't have the physical space to facilitate two events. Although there are challenges, I think it might be worth exploring as it has the potential to bridge the gap between #HigherEd and #WorkforceDevelopment. Anything to better serve #students should at least be considered. #HigherEd #CommunityCollege #Recruitment #Workforce #Career #CareerAdvising #Advising #Access #HigherEducation #College #PostTraditional
