Today, U.S. News & World Report presented its first-ever list of the “Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access” at The State of Equity in America meeting in Washington, DC. As the “global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice,” US News' analysis revealed 53 hospitals across 26 states serving socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Recognition was granted to the institutions that excelled in providing access to high-caliber care, resulting in exceptional patient outcomes. California ranked highest in number of hospitals that made the cut, with 7 recognized institutions, followed by 4 in North Carolina and 3 in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and South Carolina. Honing in on US cities with more than 1 hospital included, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, Tucson, and Tulsa each had 2 institutions listed. https://lnkd.in/enpkcGEg This is a frightening list, questioning the myths regarding best hospitals. of the 3600+ hospitals ranked for outcomes, of the internationally renowned hospitals in the US, only NYU Langone ranked in the top 1%. The Harvard hospitals did not fare particularly well, including in the patient safety rankings. However, they ranked well in avoiding provision of limited financially sound treatments. Frankly, I'm more interested in clinical outcomes and safety. While the US News and World Report each year ranks the "usual offenders" (Harvard hospitals, NYU, Hopkins, Stanford, etc.) highly, this likely relates to research funding to a great extent. Moral of the story is that ALL PATIENTS should familiarize themselves with these objective ratings, and seek care from facilities with superior clinical outcomes and safety! #ConsumersBeware

The Lown Institute has ranked Mee Memorial Healthcare System as #1 Critical Access Hospital in California for Social Responsibility. The Lown Institute, a renowned healthcare think tank, has published its 2024-25 Hospital Index, a national ranking of the top-performing hospitals. This index, considered a benchmark in the healthcare industry, evaluates hospitals and recognizes leaders in the movement for socially responsible healthcare. Mee Memorial Healthcare System has earned top marks across five major categories in this prestigious ranking. Of the 21 surveyed, Mee Memorial Healthcare System also ranked as the #1 Critical Access Hospital (CAH) in California for Social Responsibility, reflecting performance across equity, value, and outcomes categories. Mee Memorial scored an A in these five key areas: social responsibility, equity, inclusivity, value, and cost efficiency. BMHC Board President, The Honorable Dr. Larry Wallace, Jr., Ph.D., co-authored a health-equity-focused article with Dr. Norman Chenven, MD., of Austin Regional Clinic, and David Stein, CEO of Babson Diagnostics, called "Three Guys Walk into a Conference And...", in the July 2024 Edition of the Austin Medical Times Magazine. What is unique about this collaborative piece is how it was born. Three guys, who come from very different places—a medical group, community care coordination, and a diagnostics company—met as they all sat on a panel at the 2023 Healthier Texas Summit hosted by It's Time Texas in collaboration with the University of Texas System. However, they all had one question in common and that is: "How do we remove barriers, make access to care easier, and reduce any fear and anxiety related to getting medical help?" They all acknowledged statistics show the health equity gap appears to be more acute in Texas than in many other states. According to their article, our state recently ranked poorly across 24 healthcare metric determinants spanning across four categories: access, outcomes, cost, and quality of care. They also agreed the challenge of improving care is big and complex, but the place to start is with preventative care.
