Feeding America recently released our Map the Meal Gap Study—an annual, comprehensive view of how food insecurity varies across the U.S. As the only national study to provide county-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs, this study is a powerful tool for all of us to use to better understand hunger in our communities. It shows that food insecurity exists in every county, parish and congressional district in this nation, but it isn’t experienced equally. Food insecurity levels vary across regions, influenced by factors like unemployment and poverty rates as well as policies and practices rooted in history that continue to hold people back today. Some of the highest food insecurity exists right here in South Florida. This reality propels the mission and work that we do at Feeding South Florida®. Learn more about the results of the study here https://lnkd.in/eE_fB7im If you'd like to become a part of the solution in collaboration with Feeding South Florida, please contact me: [email protected] or 954-518-1818.

Tackling food insecurity is not just about putting food on a plate; it is a public health issue. The Income Security for Food Security Campaign is an important movement to demand change. 18% of households in our community are food insecure. The inability to access food directly impacts our physical and mental health and is linked to higher rates of depression, stress, and anxiety Nobody should have to choose between eating and paying for other basic needs. Food insecurity can affect anyone, anytime. Together, we can call on the Ontario government to improve income policies to tackle the root cause of food insecurity. #DemandChange. As the head of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York I see firsthand each day the impact of food insecurity in Upstate New York. This year, over 90,000 more individuals in our service area are facing challenges accessing enough food for a healthy life, according to Feeding America's ‘Map the Meal Gap’ Study. These new findings are stunning and upsetting. These numbers underscore the urgent need to address hunger across the nation and within every county in New York State. Various factors such as unemployment, poverty rates, inflation and the rising costs of basic necessities, and historical factors contribute to food insecurity, especially affecting urban communities and rural areas. It's crucial to delve into the root causes of hunger, drive tough conversations, and take action to combat food insecurity. And raise awareness that food insecurity sadly has gotten worse this past year throughout the country and in Upstate New York.

Everyone should have the means to afford enough nutritious food. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many households in our region. Household food insecurity means a household does not have enough money for food. In 2021-2022, 19.2% of households in the Southwestern Public Health region (Oxford County, Elgin County, City of St. Thomas) were food insecure. That's almost 1 in 5 households.
