According to a new Slack Workforce Lab survey, Gen Z men are 25% more likely to have experimented with #AI technology. President of Booz Allen Hamilton Women in AI group, Yvette Wolfe, spoke with Fast Company to offer thoughts on how to bridge this gap. Last week, LinkedIn hosted an Economists' Roundtable on "AI in the Workforce: #Skills, #Productivity, and #GenderEquity" with our Chief Economist, Karin Kimbrough, and leading Economists from Government and Industry. We were so grateful to be joined by some of Australia's leading experts who shared their reflections on how Generative #AI is likely to impact our workforce and economy. It was a lively and insightful session, filled with rich discussions on the potential effects of #GAI on productivity - including how different segments of our workforce are likely to be impacted. Karin shared some key takeaways from our US report, "Preparing the Workforce for Generative AI": 👩🏻💻 AI is accelerating the shift to a skills-based labor market with LinkedIn members already seeing their core skills evolve by 25% since 2015. Our framework uses three ‘GAI exposure’ categories: augmented, disrupted and isolated to understand the effect of GAI on jobs. 💡 84% of LinkedIn members are in occupations that could leverage GAI to automate at least a quarter of routine tasks and increase productivity. 🔔 Women and younger workers are likely to be disproportionately affected by GAI. Women are underrepresented in jobs that are likely to be insulated or augmented by GAI, and are overrepresented (57% of US members) in jobs that will likely be disrupted by these new technologies. We are excited to be working in partnership with our Government and Industry stakeholders to help deliver greater productivity and an equitable distribution of AI benefits across Australia. 💡What Makes A Team Smart? I recently completed the MIT Sloan’s Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy program. It’s a program that I thoroughly enjoyed, and one discussion was particularly interesting to me. A discussion on what makes a group smart. Well, it turns out that a smart group requires more than just smart people. Or people with high IQ. Three key factors impact a group's collective intelligence: ⚡Social Intelligence The ability of group members to understand others' emotions, as measured by the "Reading the mind in the eyes" test, plays a significant role. I call this the ability to read the room. ⚡Equal participation Groups where everyone is involved in discussions, not just the smart or vocal ones, tend to be smarter. ⚡Gender diversity A higher proportion of women in the group correlates with higher collective intelligence, primarily due to women's higher average social perceptiveness.  (Not my words!) MIT's experiments revealed that these factors hold true regardless of whether the interaction is face-to-face or online. Hence collective intelligence lies in a broader set of interpersonal skills. The ability to read visual cues, the ability to predict and react to others' thoughts and feelings – these are crucial for collaborative success. What does this mean for us? More and more organizations look to integrate AI into their operations (in one SemRush report, about 73% of US companies use AI in some aspects). In the rush to adopt AI, the focus for businesses tend to be on acquiring the AI know-how, find the best AI talent, level up their practices to scale faster, for their organizations to pull ahead of its competitors. This discussion reinforced for me the idea that to build a truly smart organization, it is about complementing those “intelligence” and skills with a workplace environment that fosters diversity, inclusiveness and strong social connections. Job markets are created by humans. So, it’s natural to see it evolving.   The current dynamic nature of the market is only a reflection of growth. AI is also contributing to its pace. While older or some of the traditional roles are turning futile, there are many new roles taking their place. Today, the job descriptions are far less important than the skills demanded in them, especially the growth mindset at the workplace. It's not only a desirable trait in employees but also in the cultures of organizations. According to the McKinsey & Company Global Survey, 90% of organizations believe that there’s a skill gap existing currently or will occur in the next 5 years. But, there’s a lack of understanding of the current skills organizations need. The best approach in such a case, especially when AI disruption is wrapping every industry under it as the Entrepreneur Media article suggests, is to identify: 📌 What are the key skills a role needs? 📌 Do we have a skills-based workforce planning to anticipate future demands? 📌 Are we able to support our workforce for reskilling and upskilling? By answering these questions and taking proactive measures to adopt a skill-based approach in the time of AI, businesses can easily anticipate and manoeuvre through changes. The aim of every organization today should be to future-proof their workforce. It’s rewarding for the company’s growth as well as fostering the trust that employees lose when structures face the threat of sudden change. Yesterday in our LinkedIn Community Space, we found that conversation, thanks to Meg Garlinghouse and her team who spend every day thinking about how we help every member of the global workforce. Not some. Every. It was great to see so many of us who are working on workforce development - across sectors - come together around that shared cause. The partnerships that often emerge from sessions like this are critical to building a true movement around economic opportunity in the age of AI. And that’s important. It’s clear to me that we don’t need more people doing more things right now. Instead, we need more people doing more things together. And where we see success, together, across sectors, we must help each other to scale scale. My biggest takeaway from yesterday is that AI is not just technology. It’s an opportunity both as a tool to create more pathways into the labor marker and as a force changing our world of work in unprecedented ways. The task for us all now, and especially those eager to build a more equitable world of work, is to find the opportunity. For us yesterday that began by finding the conversation that only we could have at this time on economic opportunity in the age of AI.
