It feels surreal to be making this announcement, FINALLY. When I say finally, I mean the project I’ve officially worked on for the past year has been living in my head and heart for a decade. If you know me personally or professionally you’ve likely heard me speak on the power of community. 👩🏿🤝👩🏻 Community got me through NP school with a toddler in tow. 👨🏽🤝👨🏿 Community helped me act in response to the profound effects systemic racism has on our world. Yes, the many studies and staggering statistics helped, but it is real people that support me in working through internalized racism, unlearning, learning, and growing in the way we all must when creating change. 👨🏽🤝👨🏿 Community organizing got me through feelings of rage and hopelessness in the face of so much world injustice (full disclosure—not FULLY through this one). 👩🏿🤝👩🏻 Online community got me through my son’s leukemia diagnosis while working full time mid-pandemic, something I could write many posts about. My point is any time I’ve ever had to do, learn, or face something hard, community— collective care, has gotten me through. Healthcare providers across specialties (doulas, nurses, doctors, mental health therapists, acupuncturists, etc), are facing incredible amounts of burnout and moral injury. As providers we both experience and perpetuate a great deal of harm. It is time we recognize that this is driven by the same systemic issues that fuel the health inequities we see. The mass exodus of providers and abysmal Black maternal health rates, are different sides of the same oppressive coin. Here is my response: Togather. The only collective care platform for health justice. A community for those who care, because you can't build a better world if you're burnt out. Built by and for healthcare providers. What’s as good as chatting with another OT? Chatting with another allied health clinician that truly understands how we roll! Oh. And add some scones in too! Yesterday I caught up with the wonderful Sarah Raffell from Amend Rehab to plan this month’s Your OT Tutor Alliance workshop where we’ll be talking about effective multidisciplinary practice. I know I’m biased, but it will be a great session. There will be memes, case studies and lots of discussion where we tackle topics like: How do you know when to refer to other clinicians? When is it a good idea to do a joint assessment or treatment session? What do you do if there is an overlap of scope? How do you handle things if you think the other clinician’s approach is harming your client? We’ll cover both inpatient and community examples, multidisciplinary teams within the same organisation and what the logistics look like when you work for different employers. Earlier this week, while my partner was out of the country, I found myself in a moment of carelessness that resulted in a severe injury to my finger. What unfolded over the next three days prompted deep reflection on aspects of life I hadn't previously considered. Here's the two-part account of my journey, perfect for a short weekend read. Part 1: The NHS Odyssey After accident, my son drove me to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department, even though he was preparing for his A-Levels. Upon arrival, we were met with an overwhelming crowd. My initial instinct was to abandon the NHS and return home. However, a triage nurse persuaded me otherwise, emphasizing the importance of thorough examination despite the lengthy wait ahead. After enduring five hours of anticipation, I finally received proper bandaging and an X-ray, though the results awaited analysis until the next shift. Departing the hospital under a cloud of disappointment, I resolved to return the following day. The next morning, I revisited the minor injury unit, enduring another three-hour wait. Eventually, I was informed of two fractures in my finger. Despite their location, which made intervention unlikely, a compassionate nurse elucidated the potential complications, including nerve damage. Her recommendation to seek specialized care in East Grinstead shifted my perspective from despair to hope. Despite the system's challenges, individuals like her exemplify its resilience and compassion. On the third day, I journeyed to East Grinstead, enduring an eight-hour wait despite a scheduled appointment. However, the plastic surgeon proved to be an absolute standout, performing a rigorous operation that left me feeling 'fixed' after over an hour under the knife. Reflecting on this ordeal, I gleaned several insights. Despite the system's struggles, dedicated individuals work tirelessly to maintain its functionality. Shared values of compassion, coupled with adaptable practices, underscore the NHS's essence as a community rather than a mere institution. Like any community, it comprises leaders, followers, and passengers, each contributing to its collective strength. This came across my feed again today and I realized I was in a different mindset because I was struck by a different idea (practicing #ValueDiscovery skills). The #Hospitality industry knows well the value of "knowing the customer" in a way they could delight them with simple person-centered things. The fact that everyone is slightly different and it's "the little things" that matter. Think about the last time you checked into a hotel and compare that to the last time you had great hospitality (perhaps a resort, cruise, or vacation destination).
