Work-from-home policies have become a crucial part of today’s work environment, offering flexibility and supporting employee well-being. However, in some organizations, these policies are either non-existent or accessible only after exhausting all forms of leave—sick leave, annual leave, and even half-pay leave. This can put employees in a tough spot, especially when dealing with injuries or health issues, and the financial pressure that comes with it. On the 6th April there are new changes around the Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act 2023 This introduces the right for an employee to request flexible working from day 1. • Employers are to consult with employees if they are considering rejecting their flexible working request. • Employees will have permission to make two requests in one year. • There will be a reduction in the period of employer responses to two months. • Removal of the requirement for employees to specify how their employer may deal with the effects of their requests. Other Acts for 6th April are: Carer’s Leave Act 2023 and Carer’s Regulation 2024: From 6th April employees can have unpaid leave of up to 5 days in any 12 months, to arrange care for a spouse, civil partner, their child, a parent, or a person in their household or for someone who reasonably relies on care from that employee.
