"Information changes the conversation". A quote from my personal highlight at GOVIS 2024, in a keynote presentation from ImpactLab CEO, Maria English. The conference's overarching theme was 'Trust to innovate', which came together in a series of talks centered around how digital innovation can help build trust in public services, to improve engagement, safety, and social value. It was great hearing about some of the exciting work being led by agencies to support wider government, including improving digital accessibility, helping standardise business' engagement with government, and digital identity. I found it especially heartening to hear examples of the positive impact of some projects on individuals and communities. In the closing presentation, Jonnie Haddon from Creative HQ referred to the 2024 OECD survey on Drivers of Trust in Public Institutions. The results highlight the importance of government supporting a healthy information ecosystem and investing in evidence-based research. A case study from ImpactLab earlier in the day demonstrated this well. The team had gathered data which illustrated how effective support at the community-level for people suffering severe mental health issues can result in fewer nights in public hospital beds. Their modelling also allowed the team to demonstrate where targeted investment could help optimise social value. This is especially topical at a time when some agencies are under pressure to find cost savings without compromising service. I was reminded of this while reading article earlier this week, describing the increase in call volumes to Police involving family harm and mental health, and the potential risks of increasing response thresholds to these calls. All said and done, GOVIS 2024 offered good inspiration and motivation. Thanks to GOVIS Incorporated for hosting a fantastic event and helping drive these important conversations. On behalf of the team at Catalyst, we're grateful to have been able to participate and sponsor this year's event.
