Today marks the 1865 enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation. In honor of the holiday, Grange sponsored an event at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center over the weekend where author Dudley Edmonson spoke about the importance of people of color exploring nature and the wilderness. Juneteenth allows us to reflect and rejoice while considering how to further improve access, opportunity and equity. If you want a glimpse at the extraordinary heart, soul, and intellect of New York’s Chief Judge, watch this short video of his remarks at our recent event.
Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the newly renamed Midtown Community Justice Center and its contributions to community safety and security, Chief Judge Rowan D. Wilson delivers a candid and celebratory speech in its honor. In the spirit of the holiday season, he remembers the themes of compassion and shared humanity in films like "Miracle on 34th Street" and their likeness to the work and diverse practitioners at Midtown—calling the latter New York’s own “Miracle on 54th Street.” Their long-standing, innovative foundation of meeting individuals with resources and support rather than a sentence in court is, in short, miraculous. 30 years of justice represents more than 30 years of a court—it represents 30 years of community, 30 years of humanity, and 30 years of love… and that legacy is here to stay. We’re up against tough odds and powerful opposition on all of our issues, but by combining grassroots action and tough minded advocacy we can make progress on our most pressing issues, and we have. https://lnkd.in/eTUzQycV

As one of the largest democracy celebrates 78th anniversary of her independence today, it is important to reflect on what freedom mean and the responsibilities that come with them. 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬? The recent heart-wrenching incident at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in 𝐦𝐲 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐨𝐲 is a harsh reminder of why we must not heedlessly trust any establishments - specially those which are meant to educate and/or care for us. These are the places on which dreams are built - the loved one's present and future. These institutions should never be allowed to be the cause of shattered hopes or loss. We must demand unwavering transparency, accountability, and systemic reform from the systems we rely on. It is about ensuring that education and health & social care serve their true purpose — nurturing and protecting lives, not endangering them. When lives are concerned there is no room for errors. 𝐓𝐨 𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. These are not just lofty ideals; they are lifelines. No one should ever feel robbed of their right to dream. We must fiercely protect this right and ensure that every establishment upholds its sacred duty to nurture and safeguard the lives entrusted to them. To all in the United States of America, At the core of our nation's foundation lies the fundamental principle of due process—a cornerstone of justice that ensures fair treatment and protection of individual rights. The right to due process is not merely a legal formality; it is a moral imperative that safeguards against arbitrary deprivation of life, liberty, and property. As we navigate the complexities of our modern world, it is essential that we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of due process. Whether in matters of law, governance, or personal conduct, adherence to these standards is paramount to preserving the integrity of our nation and securing a prosperous future for generations to come. Our children are the inheritors of the world we shape today, and it is our responsibility to create a society rooted in values of fairness, integrity, and respect for human dignity. By living up to the standards of due process and embracing principles of justice and equality, we lay the groundwork for a future built on strong family values and a commitment to the well-being of all. Let us come together as a nation, united in our dedication to upholding the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. By living by these standards and principles, we ensure a brighter and more promising future for our children and the generations yet to come. 📣Appropriations Update 📣 We want to thank everyone who took action this week to protect funding for @AmeriCorps & @AmeriCorpsNCCC, and the vital resources they provide community-based organizations all over the country. This week, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would jeopardize more than 71,000 AmeriCorps positions, risking the loss of vital resources for community-based organizations all over the country in 2026. Congress still has opportunities to protect and strengthen this funding, and we’ll need advocates like you to voice your support in the months ahead. ➡️️ TAKE ACTION: Urge Congress to reconsider this decision and protect funding for AmeriCorps by filling out this form, bit.ly/CCFY25, or share this and tag your representative, asking them to #Stand4Service [Image description: 1 graphic a black background saying, ‘Congress just jeaprodized 71,000 AmeriCorps positions, including vital roles at FoodCorps' and all capitalized text saying, ‘take action.’]

August is National Civic Health Month. The National Civic League has created a civic health index that includes seven components of community-based civic capital: engaged residents, inclusive community leadership, collaborative institutions, embracing diversity and equity, authentic communication, a culture of engagement, and shared vision and values. Here in Arkansas, it is in our best interests, and in the best interests of our children and grandchildren, that we elect leaders who make it their mission to create and sustain civic health infrastructure that empowers the citizens of Arkansas to build livable communities where we all can thrive together. Read the 2023 Arkansas Civic Health Index, that I co-authored, to find out what our elected officials should be thinking about to improve our state's civic health: https://lnkd.in/gqaPARWU

FCCP's Manager of Programs and Communications, Jenna Patel, shares a powerful story, while highlighting the importance for philanthropy to support the movement for reparations. As we continue to honor and celebrate Black History Month, Jenna reminds us that "in order to truly actualize a multi-racial, just, and equitable democracy for all, we must grapple with the legacy of American slavery and recognize the philanthropic investments needed to repair persistent structural racism, way beyond the days and months commemorating Black history." 💯 Check out the full blog here: https://bit.ly/3OMfAOS

🗽Today, we celebrate Juneteenth and a groundbreaking step towards racial justice in NY: Governor Hochul and state legislators have established a Reparations Commission to address the legacy of slavery and ongoing inequity. 🤝🏾 New Yorkers for Reparations (NY4R), a grassroots coalition building the movement for reparations in New York, is gathering signatures and rallying New Yorkers to ensure the commission's success. ➤ But the work has just begun. The Commission needs widespread support to counter MAGA Republican opposition, who seek to whitewash history and block progress. As the NY4R statement says: "Gov. Hochul and state legislators created this commission in response to the demands of New Yorkers across race and place who know reparations are urgent and necessary for making equality real for Black New Yorkers. And we know that the commissioners selected for the task embody the necessary expertise, experience, and values for giving us a roadmap to righting the wrongs of injustice in our state from its foundation.” Join us in taking action this Juneteenth – 📄 Read the full NY4R press release here: https://lnkd.in/dzTr9xMw ✍🏽 Sign NY4R's statement for New Yorkers supporting reparations in the press release 📢 Share this post to spread the word about New York’s historic opportunity for reparations. #Juneteenth #Reparations #RacialJustice #NewYork #NY4R #ReparationsNow #SupportReparations
