VSAC's Aspirations Project works with educators and school leaders to build school capacity to ensure that every student graduates with a plan. As part of Aspirations, the Harwood Union High School counseling and Next Step teams collaborated to create Pathways, a program specifically for students who identify as First Gen (students whose parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree). Harwood's Pathways program was built around data that indicates that first generation students access post high school education and training at lower rates than other students. The program provides equitable support and encouragement to First Gen students to identify and achieve their goals.
First Gen students were invited to a kick-off lunch, featuring local food catered by Mad Taco. Students were introduced to the program, which allows them to earn “points” toward a gift card to a local business by participating in any of a variety of “future exploration activities” such as internships, career labs, field trips, attending the career and tech center, meeting with their school counselor, and more.
Here, Pathways creators Maggie Weintraub, school counselor, and Rachael Potts, Next Step, pose with some of Harwood's First Gen adults, Harwood Superintendent Michael Leichliter and Social Studies teacher Matt Henchen. #aspirations #pathways #firstgeneration #firstgen #graduation #training #college #careerplanning
