Thanks to Julian Alssid for sharing a thought-provoking post on creating a better education and training system that drives economic growth and advancement opportunities for everyone. His post highlights the need for a "talent development system," and he and his co-author outline concrete steps for achieving this goal. One key takeaway is the importance of talent development as a lifelong process. In his concise model "talent development becomes the focus, and workforce development, corporate learning, and secondary and post-secondary education become complementary components of a holistic talent development system for lifelong learning and career mobility." I think I may add a subtitle to my LinkedIn profile: "Talent Development System Creator."

Agreeing with and adding to Jane Swifts post, I appreciate the closing statement in Julian Alssids report which states "This is the time to reimagine and rebrand workforce development as the key to an equitable future of work". What isn't mentioned but can be addressed through a change in the focus of curriculum is the profound lack of hope that many students have as a result of the pandemic, coupled with how our current educational structure disenfranchising hands-on learners. The five steps outline make perfect sense to me, and would set into motion a chain reaction of opportunity for students seeking not just jobs, but career pathways that lead to fulfilling lives. For those in #education, #workforce, and #pathways programs, I say let's work together to help make the changes we seek in this world.

Higher Ed Leader & Optimist, Past President ('13-'20), Passionate about the mission of HigherEd in enhancing access, opportunity, value & excellence through the knowledge enterprise
I couldn't agree more with Julian Alssid and Kaitlin LeMoine on the need to rebrand the term “workforce development.” As they point out “workforce development has been viewed as a lesser path – a means of providing basic job training to the unemployed and underemployed rather than a catalyst for lifelong career advancement” in similar vein to the negative perception of the terms “technical education” and “vocational education” although both provide tremendous opportunities for success in careers. The five steps described in the article provide a potential pathway forward towards integration of efforts. The links between sectors needs to be completely re-envisioned, resulting in the development of multiple pathways that are effective for both the learner (future or current employee) and employer. The degree as it is currently structured neither meets the altruistic goal of the "learned citizen" nor that of the "ready to hit the ground running" employee. The last century saw the evolution of teaching from being disciplinary and discrete to inter-, multi-, and trans-disciplinary. In the 21st century, the focus will need to be on effectively integrating skills development and work experience into academic curricula. Universities no longer have the luxury of being purveyors of knowledge for its own sake. Knowledge for its own sake will always be valued, but knowledge combined with career skills will be the driver that ensures we meet the mission envisioned by the Morrill Act of 1862: enabling a practical education, alongside a general one. We are, and have always been, a critical part of the chain that develops, maintains, and transforms the society. We need to not only provide mechanisms for talent to meet opportunity, today and in the future – we need to be an integral, rather than isolated, part of developing the future of the workplace. #HigherEd #Workforcedevelopment #integration #rebranding #career #skills

Learner-Focused Transformation Leader in the Learn & Work Ecosystem. #AllLearningCounts. #AllLearnersCount. Perspectives and posts expressed here are my own.
Consider this article from Julian Alssid - Reframing “workforce development” as talent development considers a lifelong “learning as a way of being” approach for learners, and broadens the smaller population of #HigherEducation “students” to ALL of us as learners. #talentdevelopment

Thanks Julian Alssid & Kaitlin LeMoine for the thoughtful blog. There is so much truth to the 'image' problem that workforce development has currently. I would also argue that many of our 'terms of the trade' such as career pathways must go! How many of us have followed a linear path to the jobs we have now? Instead, we need to create the lifelong learners that you speak about in the blog, which are empowered and informed of their skills and value. We also must educate employers that skills developed in one industry ARE transferrable.

Julian, I think it does a great job of defining the problem clearly and the need for the Talent Development ecosystem enclosure of all pathways. I probably would include military service as a talent and hence skills pathway. After college, my specific Navy Nuclear training launched and subsequently defined my career pathway into Corporate and Higher Education. The simplified solutions proposed are a good start and I believe all have been initiated to some degree, other than the common taxonomy, even though every role I have had in the last 40 years had a taxonomy, but not tied to common taxonomy. Loved the article.
