Embracing iconic status Recently we've seen two grocery store mainstays roll out striking new branding. #Triscuit has moved a bit away from a visually dense design to one that places the brand's logo front and center. To our eye, it has a European, wellness vibe. FYI - the new spoon looks a little like cough syrup to us :( JELL-O, meanwhile, has also gone bold, with a logo treatment that leans into cartoonish fun and takes a little more of a retro tack. This renewed emphasis on immediate recognizability at shelf reflects a change, we think – not in how consumers shop, but in how established brands engage with them at the grocery store (and, increasingly, online). Triscuit and JELL-O are icons, and they often don't need to sell their attributes to consumers – consumers are likely doing their grocery shopping with these brand names already on their shopping list. The most important thing for the brand is to make its presence obvious, simple and reassuring. Haagen-Dazs, the beloved ice cream brand, recently refreshed the packaging for its bars. The Haagen-Dazs team made a few strategic changes that elevated the overall appeal of the design, more compact organization of the product details (such as calorie count and number of bars), and vibrant shades of teal and blue. Consumers agreed—66% reported they preferred the new design while only 34% chose its predecessor. One consumer shared, “I like the colors and design of the new packaging better. Product labels have evolved from being mere stickers communicating product features, benefits, and other statutory information to becoming symbols of #brandidentity. In the modern marketing era, the colors, textures, design, and aesthetics are an integral part of the product identity and remains a key aspect in ensuring buyers resonate with brands. Some marketing experts believe that buyers develop their first impressions of a brand in as few as seven seconds, thanks to the packaging & effective labelling. In a recent announcement, #cocacola decided to ditch the labels from the #Sprite & #Spritezero 500ml on-the-go bottles in the company’s first trial in UK for “label-less” packaging. Like other brands that have adopted various minimalistic packaging measures, this is a huge leap towards building a more sustainable future and an aspect for other brands to take inspiration from. However, marketeers have always looked at #packagingandlabelling as one of the biggest aids in creating competitive differentiation and influence purchasing decisions through the visual experience.
