Part of preparing for a mediation conference is having a list of "wants" and "needs" to be incorporated into an initial offer and bottom line settlement requirements. Not having these before the conference starts, or being unable to formulate them during the conference, hurts your chances of a settlement and your bank account. A mediator's job is to get creative, but that creativity only helps if you are able to express what you are trying to accomplish in somewhat concrete terms.
