One thing that fascinates me in distributed systems is how data is managed, stored, secured and distributed. I am no database expert so learning about databases themselves and then learning about them in the realm of distributed systems is quite the challenge. How am I trying to tackle this and learn more about a domain outside my area of expertise? By reading white papers! Below is a link to a white paper from AWS that describes the design and technical decisions made for building Memory DB, an 11 9's availability!! distributed data store. I learned so much about data consistency, durability and availability and a lot of the technical terms and jargon that describe various intricate pieces of a highly available and efficient system.
