At just 3 years old, Murrell was stricken with polio, leaving his right leg paralyzed. But that didn't stop him from living his life. With the help of a custom brace provided by the State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Murrell took on life's challenges with strength and determination. Before joining Goodwill, Murrell “summered” cattle in Moscow mountains, worked at a mechanic in California, operated a service station in Idaho, and worked in the apple industry. In January 1955, Murrell began his journey with Goodwill as a repairman in the electrical appliance workshop. In 1958, he bought his own house, car, and was named Inland Empire Goodwill Worker of the Year! As we continue to celebrate 85 years of changing lives in the inland northwest, we honor his legacy today and are inspired by his unwavering spirit. #Inspiration #Goodwill #85years #Throwback #ThrowbackThursday

The Navy has its Seals, the Army has its Special Forces- the Forest Service in the U.S. and Canada have their SMOKEJUMPERS I worked hard to find the "right questions" for the smokejumper interviews for the book and hope I have succeeded. •What’s the most challenging part of your job? Maintaining relationships outside of work and finding balance between a job that requires so much of my time and attention while trying to live a life outside of it. Not only live that life but try to grow as a person, partner, and friend to people who may not have any idea how your fire career acts on your persona over time. I have found in 18 years that I am just beginning to realize that myself. · What skills- mental, emotional, and social are important for this work? Finding camaraderie among my peers by sharing stories, working out along side them, as well as checking in on their mental state as well as my own is something I remind myself of are actions I can do to keep the job in perspective. In a chaotic environment, those tiny things become valuable to trust in others and believe in them so everyone can perform their duties at the highest level. More to the emotional practices, along with faith in my brothers and sisters, is sharing vulnerabilities and personal life with them as well. These folks should know how much of your head is in the game if we are to succeed or fail and why. Outside of work, I believe its important to share the joys and hardships of this job with loved ones so that they know who we are outside of our homes. Also knowing when to live your civilian life and put aside the job, as we are not one dimensional - and celebrating life differently than our titles as firefighters is beautiful. And I also recommend seeing a therapist." FIRE EATERS : Aerial Fire Fighting Over the Last Century

When it comes to natural disasters, everyone is equal—whether you live in a luxurious mansion or government-subsidized housing, whether you're in the United States or Africa, disasters remind us of how fragile wealth, fame, and status truly are. Embracing kindness and cherishing the present should be the mindset we adopt. From the perspective of architectural and civil engineering, ensuring a home’s survival in apocalyptic events like massive wildfires requires a systemic overhaul. Comprehensive urban planning is particularly critical, such as optimizing water resources, power systems, and neighborhood layouts. This, in turn, should inform the overall design of urban firefighting and disaster response systems. Achieving these goals would likely require national, or at least statewide, coordination for maximum effectiveness. On the scale of individual buildings, the use of genuinely fire-resistant construction materials and the implementation of efficient and durable smoke management systems are essential to minimize casualties and property damage. At the very least, with these measures in place, even if a house is destroyed by fire, its structure and foundation can be repaired and reinforced for reconstruction, significantly reducing rebuilding costs. This is, of course, just my humble opinion, offered for discussion.
I was sure the Pacific Palisades house my family loved was the last one I’d ever live in. Now I can hardly convince myself that it’s gone forever, writes Karl Taro Greenfeld. 🔗: https://on.wsj.com/4gOVi3t

Why does the US government have millions of dollars for illegal immigrants, foreign countries, and assorted crazy projects BUT NO ABILITY TO PUT AN ALL OUT MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR effort to save the people impacted by Hurricane Helene in the South East of the US? WHO IS ACTUALLY IN CHARGE of the handling this crisis and where is the ACTUAL DATA on the status of US citizens impacted by the Hurricane?

I'm going to continue to highlight the extraordinary service of our NEIGHBORS - every day Americans and random STRANGERS who are POURING into North Carolina to save lives... as the federal government continues to FAIL. Check this out. Goats are EVERYWHERE now... being brought in by people who understand the mountainous terrain. They're pouring in with supplies on goats, horses, and pack mules now... making sure to get to the victims stranded because the roads are destroyed. Take note: not one elected official or FEMA rep in this group. Americans are amazing. People are BEAUTIFUL. And our government needs a complete overhaul. REPOST EVERYWHERE and honor them!! #thinblueline #lawenforcement

🤝 Buddy Check: Be There for Our Veterans 🤝 For many of our veterans, every day is a new battle, and while these struggles may be invisible, they are real and challenging. It's crucial that we, as a community, step up and be present for our heroes in their times of need. A simple conversation can make a big difference. 🗣️💬 Let’s not wait for them to reach out; instead, let's be proactive in showing we care. Reach out, make the call, and send that text. Let’s ensure every veteran knows they are not alone in this fight. 📱👥 Together, we can help prevent veteran suicide. Let's make every day a buddy check day.
