Financial literacy is important for everyone. Formal financial educational programs like SecureFutures (Teen Financial Literacy Education, Tools, and Mentoring) become especially important for individuals and communities who may not have access/strong access to a more informal but still high-quality financial education at home. I mentioned in this interview that I think economically marginalized families can find it more difficult to talk about money, credit, savings, budgeting, loans, etc. It's hard for a parent to choose between being open about their finances to give their child access to financial literacy, or allowing their child to exist as a child without worrying about the financial strain their household is under. That's not a choice economically well-off parents are typically faced with. It's a much easier call to talk with your child about how you budget for the household when you can comfortably afford food, fun, bills, and savings every month. It's harder when you constantly find yourself choosing which to give up in any given pay period. Programs like SecureFutures give teens access to a high-quality financial education, without putting economically marginalized families in this impossible position. I'm proud to be an alum, and I'm happy and thankful that Milwaukee has them.

Every Summer parents are looking for fun and meaningful things to engage their kids in, till school re-opens. This summer, engaging the youth in financial literacy feels very enticing. I have observed that teaching financial literacy early on is crucial for developing good financial habits and a healthy relationship with money. The key principles of financial literacy include; earning, saving, investing, protecting, spending, and borrowing. That provide a solid foundation for kids to understand how to manage their finances effectively. By learning these principles, kids can develop essential skills such as: 1. Budgeting and prioritizing expenses 2. Setting financial goals and working towards them 3. Making smart financial decisions 4. Avoiding debt and building credit 5. Building wealth and securing their financial future Introducing these concepts in an age-appropriate manner can set kids up for long-term financial success and stability. Starting early can make a significant difference! I've said it 100 times, financial literacy should absolutely be taught in high school and even thereafter as part of their college curriculum. 💻 I had no clue how impactful that first credit card 💳 purchase I made at 18 would be to my 30 year old self.
