Sport for women & girls is not just "sport", competitive sport or traditional sport. Sport, in its widest sense, is an opportunity to centre ourselves; to strive, to test ourselves; to share a common purpose with other women; to build our physical health and mental well-being; to experience being outdoors; experiencing our bodies in a non-sexualised, non-ornamental way. It's a passport to social interaction with other females; it's a break from the norm. It requires our undivided attention - reflect on how society operates to constantly distract us! It may demand skill, tenacity, a sense of adventure, maybe risk taking. Again think how society deters girls and women from taking risks. These are life changing experiences. It's not simply, "sport".
New research shows that only 15% of sports news focused on women’s sport in Victoria in 2022-23. Via the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation’s new report, The Conversation of Sport: Representation of Women in Sports News Coverage (2022-23). Happy New Year everyone! Just before we broke for the holidays I was honoured to join Tom Bowers from Hypothesis Media to talk to Jo Redfern and Andrew W. on their Kids Media Club Podcast about the https://lnkd.in/e7qPHUdB We discussed kids' fandom surrounding sport - what is driving it, how to nurture it, and how it is changing as tweens begin to enter the space. Key takeouts for me are - 1) How the changing content consumption patterns of today's tweens are going to have a long-lasting impact on live sports (both in person and broadcast) 2) How engaging kids in sports isn't just about taking adult engagement dynamics and adding more primary colours and shorter words, you need to rethink things to a more fundamental degree. 3) How female sports fans and women's sports are rewriting the rule book for fandom and setting the agenda for what sports fandom will look like in 10 years. And that’s not just men btw, some women watch sports too and enjoy it just as much. And you know what the best bit about this behaviour is, it helps keep the beautiful sports story-telling ecosystem alive, it helps it thrive, beyond just the LIVE coverage. It makes room for podcasts, post-match shows, and addas beyond the live action you get to watch on TV or in stadia. It helps employ thousands of people in the long run, including many men and women, like me. So keep at it. Keep watching sports and sports related content. And watch the beauty of the sheer unscripted drama, unfold over and over again from myriad perspectives. #sportspr #pr #sportsbroadcast #sportecosystem #fandom #sportsfan
