I am happy to announce the publication of a new book, Accelerating the Transition to a Hydrogen Economy - Achieving Carbon Neutrality. Mehmet Fatih KAYA and I contribute to the book a chapter on moving towards a net zero emission in the energy sector. Eugene Beh, A.B./A.M. ‘09, helped research the potential of quinones, an abundant organic compound, as a reactant material in flow batteries. He sees quinones as a cheaper, safer alternative as an active material in battery storage systems to vanadium: “Vanadium production is dominated by China and Russia. This unlocks easy domestic production of battery materials, which has been a longstanding policy goal of the United States and the European Union." Eugene Beh, a former undergraduate and later postdoctoral researcher in the labs of Profs. Michael Aziz and Roy Gordon, spun off his research into Quino Energy, a company producing organic, water-based quinones reactant material for use in flow battery storage grids. Flow batteries are a potential solution for grids that use renewable energy sources – when the sun is shining or wind is blowing, they can store the excess electricity, then release it at night or when the winds have calmed.

Publishing as the first author in a journal filled with inspiring studies has been a long-held dream, and I’m beyond excited to share this achievement.   𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭❓ Black carbon (BC) is a pollutant that poses serious risks to both human health and the environment. My research focuses on evaluating how local sources—specifically road traffic and residential biomass burning—contribute to BC pollution at an urban scale. Through an innovative high-resolution modelling approach, we captured the impact of these sources in Coimbra, Portugal, and validated the results over a six-month monitoring campaign. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: • Road transport contributes more than 80% to BC concentrations at a traffic site. • Biomass burning becomes a significant contributor during the winter months. • At pollution hotspots, hourly BC levels could reach up to 85 μg/m3, emphasizing the need for detailed spatial and temporal analysis. • Modelling agrees with measurements of elemental carbon (EC), but underestimates optical equivalent BC. This study highlights the importance of 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧” reported by modelling to ensure comparability with measurements obtained by different techniques.   A heartfelt thank you to my supervisor, Dr. Oxana Tchepel, for her unwavering guidance and support, and to the entire team involved in the ISY-AIR project. It's time the government followed Now Then's lead and blew the whistle for the last time on Drax Group and its insatiable appetite for burning trees while warming its hands burning through billions of taxpayer funded subsidies. If we stop the latter we save the trees. Something the City of #Sheffield is very much in favour of now that it has admitted the folly of felling trees, causing much unrest in the leafier groves of academe, in the self-styled Outdoor City. Odd then that The University of Sheffield, many of whose fellows were among the most vocal of those opposed to the fellers, recently made Drax Group a founding partner of its flagship Energy Innovation Centre. The press notice from the university did not say how much Drax Group is investing in the new centre - perhaps Now Then or another independent journalist will oblige and ask? At the very least Government should be demanding that any IP generated from state funded R&D should remain in the public realm and shared with others as open source -- a massive polluter like Drax should not profit from it.
