From signing Cristiano Ronaldo to bidding for the FIFA World Cup 2034, the Middle Eastern giants Saudi Arabia are spending massively in the sports world. As reported by the Guardian in 2023, estimations suggest that the Saudis have invested over USD 6.3 Billion (INR 52,000 Crores approximately) in the sports market globally through the Public Investment Fund (PIF) (the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia) and other private and government entities since 2021. Here are a few noteworthy deals: - The takeover of The Premier League-based Newcastle United Football Club in 2021 - Revamping the Saudi Pro League (SPL) (the nation's top-tier football tournament) by roping in global stars like Ronaldo, Neymar, Benzema, Mane, and Kante amongst others to play since 2021 - Launching LIV Golf, the world’s largest Golf tournament in 2023 - Buying stakes in the Professional Fighters League (PFL), a global MMA competition last year - Starting an E-Sports World Cup in Riyadh in 2024 - expected to be the world’s largest-ever E-Sports competition Alongside investments in sporting properties and players, the state is bidding bigger on sponsorships. aramco, a state-owned petroleum and natural gas company is one of the biggest sponsors of FIFA and the International Cricket Council (ICC). Apart from oil companies and the government, investments from the Saudi tourism sector have been noteworthy. Lionel Messi is the brand ambassador of Visit Saudi, and the Saudi Tourism Authority | الهيئة السعودية للسياحة is among the main sponsors of the Indian Premier League (IPL). But wait. Why is the nation splurging so much on sports globally, when traditionally the industry doesn't have a lucrative ROI compared to other sectors? One reason is that the rise in media rights and multiple avenues within the sports ecosystem sees an upward trajectory and the pathway to profitability is there. Also, for a highly developed economy dependent majorly on oil money, sports are imperative in repositioning the nation as a global force with multiple possibilities. It will attract billions of eyeballs and gauge a lot of foreign investments. Some with deep pockets and intentions will grow the region in return. While the show runs and industries flourish, the nation will leverage sports to brand itself as the most happening place on earth. Sounds interesting?
