🌟 Equal Care Day🌟 This Thursday, on the 29th of February, we celebrate Equal Care Day, shedding light on the unequal distribution of care work between genders. Despite progress, women continue to bear a significantly larger share of daily caregiving responsibilities, impacting their participation in the workforce and within teams. 🌈 Today is #IDAHOBIT Day, the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination. PhD candidate Jan Kilicaslan and Associate Professor Melissa Petrakis from Monash Social Work recently undertook research exploring the lived experiences and perspectives of healthcare workers regarding #LGBTQIA+ safety and responsiveness. We asked them what changes we need to make to ensure our healthcare system is safe and inclusive for LGBTQIA+ communities - both as patients and as healthcare workers. Here’s what they had to say: “Despite decades of advocacy and effort from LGBTQIA+ experts and allies to improve health, wellbeing and employment-related outcomes, the evidence highlights that people from LGBTQIA+ communities consistently have significantly poorer healthcare experiences as both healthcare recipients and in workplace equity as healthcare employees. This is often due to experiences of prejudices such as homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and intersexphobia. “Our research found that there’s still an urgent need for targeted policies and models of care to tackle inequities faced by LGBTQIA+ people in the health workforce and when accessing healthcare. There’s a lack of trauma-informed practice and many unsafe clinical and cultural approaches with consumers. We identified the need for safer workplaces that overtly validate LGBTQIA+ pride and inclusion, with policies and practices that avoid tokenism and embed permanent and sustainable change. “We also found a lack of formal training to support knowledge and confidence in working with and caring for LGBTQIA+ people. There’s still work required to promote understanding of pronoun use, gender identity and diversity, intersex variation, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences of gender and sexual diversity. We need regular training and education delivered to all staff, in all disciplines at all seniority levels at health services, and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ sensitivity in university education curricula for all health disciplines. “LGBTQIA+ specific Peer Lived Experience roles are also vital to improving safety and responsiveness. These were seen as invaluable roles that create a sense of safety, and can fill knowledge gaps and facilitate safer practice by offering mentoring, supervision and secondary consultations. “Crucially, services must invest appropriate resources to ensure sustainability and long-term commitment to initiatives that strengthen and sustain best practice in providing safe and inclusive care to LGBTQIA+ communities.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/geRaeeSB

Curious about the movement to see care experience recognised as a protected characteristic? Trying to get your local community to move in the same direction. Until we see the change implemented under the equality act I will keep opening up these opportunities to get people together to learn about and and discuss the reasons why this action is the right thing. Josh MacAlister MP referred to the outcomes for care experienced people as the civil rights issue of our time. It was the government review he led which recommended many changes needed to the system including the inclusion of care experience as a protected characteristic under the equality act. (Link in the comments). There have been a growing number of consultations and research since all which conclude the same need to act to protect care experienced people. No one is suggesting this is a magic wand to ensure all the outcomes of care experienced children are improved, but it is a necessary step on the journey. As a care experienced person myself and someone with decades of experience delivering change and leading inclusion I will continue to play my part in raising awareness.
