A recent investigation sheds light on the activities of the Russian maritime fleet in the North Sea. Data from Global Fishing Watch revealed concerning details about Russian vessels operating in the region, including possible acts of sabotage near undersea cables and energy pipelines. The study, conducted by Belgian newspaper De Tijd and Follow the Money (FTM), focused on 1,012 Russian-flagged non-military vessels active in the North Sea since 2014. These vessels, ranging from oil tankers to privately owned yachts, were involved in over 60,000 loitering events near critical infrastructure. Russian special services are known for their subversive tactics, with a culture centered around provocation, subversion, and deception. This intelligence activity extends to Europe, with events like the French Olympics potentially becoming targets for covert operations. The investigation highlights the strategic importance of safeguarding undersea cables and pipelines in the North Sea against potential threats. Understanding the Chekist mentality and covert intelligence collection tactics is crucial in addressing security concerns in the region. #NorthSea #RussianMaritimeFleet #sabotage #RussianIntelligence #ChekistMentality #UnderseaCables #UnderseaPipelines #CovertIntelligenceCollection

Early on the 18th of May, reports emerged that a #crudeoil tanker was struck by an anti-ship ballistic missile while transiting south through the #RedSea near #Yemen. The Panama-flagged tanker WIND (IMO 9252967) suffered minor fire damage as a result of the strike, but the vessel soon continued on its journey. #Houthi forces have not yet claimed responsibility. The WIND collected oil from #Nvorossiysk, Russia, on the 29th of April and transmitted #China as its destination via AIS, signaling “CHINA FOR ORDERS.” Owned in Cyprus and managed from Greece, the WIND transited the Suez Canal between the 12th and 13th of May. She went AIS (Automatic Identification System) dark on the 16th of May. #CENTCOM reported, “The impact of the anti-ship #ballisticmissile caused flooding and loss of propulsion and steering. A #coalition vessel responded to the distress call, but the crew restored propulsion and steering, with no casualties. The WIND resumed its course under its own power.” The vessel has a dubious history linked to transporting #Russian and #Venezuelan crude, fitting the definition of a member of the dark fleet. At this time, she is not insured by any of the International Group of P&I Clubs, and according to the European Maritime Safety Agency, she has not received a port state control inspection in the past year. After the WIND went #AISdark on the 16th of May, SynMax’s maritime domain awareness platform, #Theia, automatically identified the vessel four times over the next four days AIS dark in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Blue detections are AIS light, and yellow detections are AIS dark. Theia’s proprietary AI scans more than 20 million KM2 of oceanic #satelliteimagery every day. By automatically identifying vessels over 30m, even those AIS dark or spoofing, Theia has created a unique maritime library of vessel imagery and #patternoflife (POL) behavior. With jamming constantly impacting maritime trade and transportation in the Baltic, Black, and Andaman Sea, as well as the Mediterranean and Suez Canal, the time is now for both redundant navigation solutions as well as contingency planning for a maritime incident. Ships had to reroute around Africa instead of through the Suez in 2021 and the cost for that incident was almost $10B in less than a week, impacting governments, corporations, and civilians financially. Alternative satellite constellations and increased sextant training of mariners is not the reliable path forward. #gps #gpsjamming #navigationwarfare https://lnkd.in/gtkSQk8T

What is going on with GPS in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean? Recently I wrote about escalation dynamics and how conflicts can spill over in other other areas (https://lnkd.in/eaE_SCAk) — continuing that effort, this piece looks at the massive increase in GPS jamming and spoofing by Russia in the last few months and years - chock full of interesting links too! https://lnkd.in/eXgcYzN7

Recently, a Chinese research vessel was intercepted by Indonesian coastguard. Reason: they turned off their AIS transponder several times while in Indonesia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Ships that turn off their AIS systems are called dark ships, because they become invisible to authorities and other ships. International maritime law forbids this, yet thousands of ships do this to avoid being detected when engaged in illegal or illicit activities. The biggest dangers to nations is when these ships operate within their Exclusive Economic Zones. Lack of realtime visibility makes it difficult for coastguards to prevent activities such as illegal fishing, chemical dumping, trafficking, or even terrorist infiltrations. Today’s solutions just don’t cut it. We wrote a comprehensive article talking about how EEZs can be protected through persistent monitoring, a solution we’re building here at PierSight.
