Think being tall is a non-negotiable to becoming a pro tennis player? You’re wrong. Jasmine Paolini, standing at just 1.63m tall, is a testament to the fact that size doesn't limit success on the tennis court. Fresh off her Roland-Garros final, Paolini has continued to impress, advancing past the first round of Wimbledon yesterday. Historically, many top players have defied the norms of height. Paolini exemplifies that being shorter brings its own set of advantages. While taller players might benefit from a powerful serve and a greater lever arm for generating force, shorter players like Paolini excel with exceptional agility. Her ability to cover the court, whether side to side or moving forward, is unparalleled. This superior movement is something she’s honed and invested in, making it a significant asset in her gameplay. Paolini’s game isn't just about movement. Despite her stature, she can generate remarkable power, thanks to her incredibly looseness. It allows her to achieve a strong whip effect, leading to impressive acceleration and striking ability. Moreover, Paolini truly "plays" tennis. She doesn’t just hit the ball; she sees the court, utilises angles, and brings a creativity to her game that sets her apart. Her deep love for the sport translates into a unique feel for the game, making her a great tennis player. For shorter players aspiring to reach the top, remember: your movement can be your greatest asset. Work on it tirelessly, practice chasing every ball, and enjoy the process. Develop your feel for the game and your ability to create power through looseness and a strong whip effect. While it might be tempting to wish for added height, keep in mind that taller players often envy the speed and agility that come naturally to those of smaller stature, wishing to be shorter themselves. Jasmine Paolini’s success story is proof that with the right skills and mindset, you can excel in tennis. Believe in yourself and your unique strengths, and the sky's the limit. #PatrickMouratoglou #JasminePaolini #PlayerAnalysis #tennis #sports

Founder & CEO at Boob Armour® | Mum of 3 | 2023 Women’s Agenda Emerging Entrepreneur Winner | Championing Female Safety & Empowerment | Innovating Breast Protection for Active Women & Girls
As the Australian Open unfolds its thrilling spectacle on the courts, my mind takes an introspective detour to a different kind of tennis battlefield—the Annual Parent Tennis Tournament at the kid's primary school. Picture this: a lively, friendly competition dominated by 99% women, each wielding a tennis racket with enthusiasm, camaraderie and occasionally, a strategic aim. It was during one of these spirited matches that the infamous inner thigh shot became etched in my tennis chronicles. The opponent, a mum, determined and perhaps a tad too competitive, made it her mission to unleash powerful shots to me whilst I was at the net, blocking as many as possible. Alas, the inner thigh fell victim to a well-aimed missile, leaving a mark both physically and deep in my memory and an eternal dislike for that particular mum! But here's where the story takes a teeny detour into innovation. While the creation of Boob Armour isn't the central theme, it's worth a nod in this reflection. The Parent Tennis Tournament, predominantly a celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie, inadvertently contributed to the broader dialogue on the unseen risks that come with playing sports. As I sit immersed in the Australian Open today, surrounded by the skill and finesse of professional athletes, I can't help but appreciate the diverse nature of the sports journey. It's not just about the matches on the grand stage but also about the countless courts where parents, amateurs, and enthusiasts engage in their own versions of tennis battles. So, here's to the Annual Parent Tennis Tournament, where 99% women wield their rackets with joy and friendly competition, inadvertently weaving a narrative that extends beyond the visible rallies. And, yes, to those strategic shots that sparked a moment of reflection and perhaps a tiny touch of innovation in the form of Boob Armour. 🎾💪 #TennisJourney #SportsReflection #AustralianOpenChronicles #BoobArmourInnovation #ParentsTennisTales #GameOnCourt #MemoriesOnCourt #SportsMoments #TennisDetours #AustralianOpenMagic #ao Tory Archbold Pip Stocks Elise Elliott Elise Hedley Dale Alexis Daish Australian Open Alex Mallen Pip Stocks Katherine Bishop Katherine McIntosh Laura Burton

Science and technology should focus on these aspects.
This table and I, we have some history together. DHS Rainbow was the table used in London 2012 so, when I saw that it had been selected for Paris 2024, I thought that it would be all fine when it comes to accesibility. But it was not. I realized that the table wasn´t wheelchair accesible during one test event so I put all my efforts to solve it. I took pictures, I took measurements and sent several reports to the manufacturer to ask them to modify the design so I could avoid the awful situation that happened in London 2012 where the wheelchair tables in the field of play had to be replaced with the tables from the training area. I didn´t want the wheelchair players to be neglected again. Not on my watch. Thanks to the priceless cooperation of DHS and after several unsuccesful tests, they produced the DHS Rainbow II that, now yes, it is fully accesible for wheelchairs. Paralympic Games start tomorrow and I will be the Technical Operation Manager for Para table tennis to ensure that the conditions for the Para players are the best so they can shine in the same stage and with the same equipment that their non-disabled counterparts. We face 10 intense competition days that will show to the world that table tennis is the most inclusive sport. I will enjoy every minute of it.

The red box in the image below highlights a major problem in women's tennis. As we start 2024, the women's game is on the cusp of an exciting new era, with Iga Świątek, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff all 25 or younger, grand slam winners, and exceptional and varied players. Fans want to see rivalries develop between these players, and for them to meet in the biggest tournaments in the matches that have the highest stakes. Instead, we'll see an Australian Open final with just one of these four players, with that player being an 80%+ favourite. The de facto final between Gauff and Sabalenka - which promises to be a classic - will be played when the majority of the world's tennis fans are at work, school, or asleep. This isn't to diminish the achievements of the four other women in the top half of the draw. Nosková beat Świątek en route to the quarter finals and is there by rights. But there's a major reason that these upsets happen more in the women's draw of grand slams: the best of three set format. Świątek and Rybakina suffered very narrow third-set defeats (in Rybakina's case, a record-breaking narrow defeat). Had they been afforded two more sets, they'd have been strong favourites to progress. According to our modelling at Twenty First Group, the best of five set format means the better players reach the final nearly 50% more often. The rivalry between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic was able to thrive in part because of the extra life each player was often given in grand slams. Moving women's grand slams to a best of five set format seems unlikely for a number of reasons. And WTA events of course have a best of three format too. But in order to capitalise on a generational set of rivalries, should the organisers of women's tennis competitions think of ways - without undermining the integrity of the sport - of encouraging more head-to-heads between these top players? Could, for example, tournaments be re-seeded at the quarter or semi-final stage? Or could group stages ensure that top players can afford an off day? These ideas will seem anathema to hardcore tennis fans. But for casual fans like me, I'd much rather spend this Saturday morning watching a best vs. best rivalry rather than a potentially lopsided contest.
