🎗️ Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️ This September, we honor the strength, resilience, and courage of children fighting cancer and their families who face each day with unwavering hope. Childhood cancer changes the lives of these young warriors and their loved ones forever, and we stand with them in their battle. The gold ribbon symbolizes childhood cancer awareness, representing the preciousness of children and the fight against these diseases. Brain tumors are one of the most challenging forms of childhood cancer, often requiring innovative treatments and relentless research to find a cure. 🔍 Key Facts: - Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children. - High-grade gliomas (HGG) in children have a five-year survival rate of just 10-30%. - Immunotherapy, though promising, faces significant challenges in pediatric brain tumors. 💛 At the Glioblastoma Research Organization, we are committed to advancing research and treatment for pediatric brain tumors. Over the past year, we've proudly funded three groundbreaking projects aimed at improving outcomes for children with these aggressive cancers: 1. Project Liam at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA): This project focuses on using checkpoint inhibitors, a form of immunotherapy, to enhance the body's immune response against high-grade gliomas (HGG) in children. By administering checkpoint inhibitors prior to surgery, the research aims to "prime" the immune system to better attack tumor cells, potentially improving survival rates and understanding how these therapies can change the tumor and surrounding cells. 2. Project Every Day Counts at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in partnership with Gray for Glioblastoma: This initiative explores a new type of treatment using CAR-T cell therapy, a cutting-edge approach that modifies a patient’s T cells to target and destroy cancer cells. The project specifically targets children with relapsed gliomas, aiming to offer new hope for those who have exhausted other treatment options. This research could pave the way for more effective and personalized treatments for young patients. 3. Project DeLaRosa at Children's National Hospital: This project is developing advanced biopsy techniques to study pediatric brain tumors, starting with diffuse midline glioma (DMG). By taking multiple samples from the same tumor over time in a murine model, researchers can observe how the tumor changes and responds to treatments. The goal is to apply these findings to glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), another aggressive brain tumor, to develop new drug combinations and more effective therapies tailored to these challenging cancers. Every step we take is a step closer to a future where no child has to endure this fight alone. Thank you for supporting our mission to bring hope, healing, and a cure to children and families impacted by childhood cancer. 🌟 #cancerawareness #childhoodcancer #glioblastoma

#WARRIORWEDNESDAY: Your story with #glioblastoma. Today, we share Ana Lucia's story. Ana Lucia was the daughter and sister anyone would love to have. She was a beautiful young lady who left us too soon. Studious, charismatic, a world traveler, witty, and everyone's friend, Ana Lucia was a strong young lady who did not let her diagnosis and treatments get in her way of finishing her nursing school program. In August 2022, she graduated with her RN degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville, at about the same time she was finishing her Chemotherapy/radiation treatments. Lucia passed away at the age of 26. She was born in Peru but grew up in the small beach town of Satellite Beach, Florida. Ana Lucia's strength, positivism, and love for life will never be forgotten! 12-6-1996 / 06-23-2023 This story was submitted with the written consent of the Cabanillas family. #GBMNews ⚠️ | Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center have made an important discovery. They found that special white blood cells, called natural killer (NK) cells, can be modified to produce a protein called interleukin-21 (IL-21) which has demonstrated strong, sustained antitumor activity against glioblastoma stem cells. This innovative approach could offer a promising new treatment option for this aggressive brain cancer. ➡️Learn more by visiting: https://lnkd.in/e3iwbAQN Source: MD Anderson Cancer Center #braincancer #cancerresearch #neurooncology #science #GBM #GBMRO #braincancerresearch

#WARRIORWEDNESDAY: Your story with #glioblastoma. Today, we share Katie's dad's story. In 2016, everything was normal until it wasn’t. In October 2016, my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma. I was in 6th grade, my sister in 9th. I was so confused about why this could happen to me and my family. My dad did a few months of radiation but then decided he didn’t want to anymore. After seven short months that felt so long, he passed away in May of 2017. My dad was a warrior and will forever be. He loved baseball and especially loved his family. I miss him every day, and every Father’s Day is hard. This story was submitted with the written consent of Katie M. We'd love to hear your story and share it with our supportive GBM community.
