Could Nike Shox be the next reboot from the shoe giant? Rumors are floating, but here’s my data-backed prediction:
Nike partners with Kendrick Lamar to bring back Nike Shox as he launches his next album. If they don’t, they probably should, and here’s why.
Nike has a partnership with Drake, public enemy #1 to the Kendrick Lamar camp, and the latest release from that partnership is flopping to put it nicely. Sneakerheads judge the success of shoe releases by how fast the sizes sell out. The NOCTAs have been known to sell out the same day they’re released in the past, but not this time. The Nike NOCTA Hot Step II shoe dropped during the midst of the biggest rap beef of all time and Nike’s poster boy was on the receiving end of some serious allegations. Most of the sizes are still in stock, nearly two months after its release.
Not only did Kendrick Lamar win the beef, he recently popped out at his sold-out Ken & Friends show in LA on Juneteenth, and his outfit choice delighted the crowd. His red hoodie and jeans called back to the late great Tupac, and the audience was surprised to see the nostalgic Nike Shox on his feet. It's not the first time he's been seen in Shox, he also wore them to the Grammy's last year.
The data so far is limited, but early Google Trends figures show the term “Nike Shox” has increased 29% in popularity over the last month, and the traction is ticking upward. This could be a leading indicator of demand for this product.
This choice of shoe adds some spice to the lore of the rap beef. How could someone who dethroned one of the most powerful people in music do it in a forgettable shoe like that?

👟 Kyrie Irving’s First Signature Shoe With Anta
Kyrie Irving debuted his first signature shoe with Anta, the Kai 1, during a game against the Brooklyn Nets, showcasing the "Artist on Court" colorway. The design of the Kai 1 shares similarities with Irving's previous Nike signature line, featuring a mid-cut construction, a midfoot strap for lockdown, and his signature logo on the tongue.
Nike cut ties with Kyrie in December 2022 under controversial circumstances after comments Kyrie made on social media related to antisemitism.
The Anta Kai 1 "Artist on Court" colorway is set to release on March 6, with additional colorways expected in the coming months. Anta is a Chinese sneaker brand - we'll soon see whether their strategy of partnering with someone like Kyrie Irving can help them gain market share.
Notably, Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors also has a signature sneaker line with Anta. With two of the biggest stars in basketball on their roster, Anta is starting to develop more brand awareness.
The market for basketball shoes is becoming more competitive with more sneaker brands aiming to gain market share.

I've been a Nike loyalist for as long as I can remember, from my childhood to my time working at Nike.
Today, while taking our kids to their soccer games, I wore and bought my first non-Nike shoe in a long time.
My oldest snapped a picture, noting its classic yet stylish look. It also helps that my daughter who’s a teenager thinks that my look was on point or on trend 🤣😂.
As my Gen Alpha daughter praised its feel and performance (thanks to enhanced foam securing my foot), I agreed. The shoe, a trail runner from KEEN's archives called the A86, offered an aggressive trail tread and all-day sneaker comfort with retro suede craftsmanship. The feel is on point and supports the heel.
I tried to buy more colors, but they were mostly sold out.
Kudos to an amazing shoe to the KEEN team!

Thinking about something I had read a while ago about Michael Jordan, Nike, and his shoes.
Everyone knows Michael for his game (still to this day he is probably the most iconic athlete in modern history), but let’s talk about the business side for a moment.
Back when Michael entered the league, he signed a shoe deal with Nike. The NBA had a league rule back then that shoes worn in a game had to be at least 51% white or white and in accordance with the rest of the teams uniform.
Now back then, Nike was not even in the realm of the basketball world. They were primarily a track and field brand.
Jordan’s stipulation to signing with Nike over Converse and Adidas (the two most prominent basketball shoe companies) was that he wanted his signature line to be “iconic”, and they had to deliver on that. Because of this, his shoe designs were bold and did not align with the NBA’s uniform policies.
Did you know that every single game that Jordan wore his signature shoe he was fined $5,000? I know that doesn’t seem like much to a professional basketball player, but when you total it up he was being fined over $400,000 a season just to wear his own shoes.
Where am I going with this?
Jordan and Nike bet on themselves. They chose to pay the fines every single game, and believed that they were going to build the most iconic sneaker line in history.
Now, flash forward today, and Nike’s 2023 fiscal year ended in $6.6 billion dollars in revenue, just off of the Jordan brand.
The moral of this story is that growth is not always linear, especially when it comes to dollars. Sometimes a cost has to be incurred first. Patience and discipline win.
I willing to bet Phil Knight and MJ are pretty darn happy they paid those fines.
When it comes to controversy, Nike has mastered the art, and their latest Nike x JACQUEMUS collaboration, is no exception.
Front and center of this daring Spring 2024 collection is none other than the unapologetic force of nature, Sha'Carri Richardson.
Drawing inspiration from Nike's history of eyebrow-raising moments and disruptive campaigns (hello, Kaepernick's "Dream Crazy"), Richardson embodies the spirit of breaking boundaries and pushing limits.
From the unmistakable "Swoosh Bag" to the avant-garde "Le Haut Drapé", each piece in this collection serves as a bold declaration of individuality and athleticism.
In true Nike fashion (why add a pun if you don’t intend it?), Sha'Carri Richardson takes the spotlight, emphasizing that this collaboration isn't just about fashion anymore.
This campaign is a powerful statement, paying homage to unapologetic self-expression, and a jubilation of those who fearlessly shatter molds.
