This video on vintage vs. modern Carhartt is a fascinating look at how a classic company built on a reputation for quality stays true to its brand while going through a massive hike in demand. You should really watch the video, but here's a brief synopsis of what makes Carhartt interesting. As presenter Michael Kristy notes, there's a certain threshold of quality Carhartt refuses to drop below on its flagship products. Its brand is durability; new Carhartt is still very durable, though maybe marginally less so on a handful of its classic products. Because it has a target of high quality at a reasonable price, the company HAS to use its own manufacturing facilities for any Made in America pieces, which places a cap on how many of its highest-quality products it can create. That means it's expanded into overseas manufacturing and some third-party stuff, but the overseas manufacturing is NOT used on its bestsellers (the Carhartts your dad and grandad wore). Instead, the products it's known for are still made the same way they've always been (with minor updates), while less-popular pieces are built overseas. Its fashion brand (W.I.P) is spun off separately to keep the integrity of the original, and the accessories that mostly get worn for fashion purposes (beanies, et al) are the only things that get farmed out to third parties. Obviously, in this situation you'd prefer to do everything in-house, but I think Carhartt's done a good job straddling the fence between keeping its reputation as a quality brand while growing its revenue and its market.
