September is National Healthy Aging Month and although hearing of this observance might first make you think about older adults, healthy aging starts earlier than you think. If you’re reading this post then most likely you have already started to experience some gradual changes, which can start in your 20s with your metabolism decreasing, so it’s important to develop and maintain healthy aging practices throughout your whole life so you can have the best quality of life possible. So, how can we improve our chances of maintaining optimal health as we age? According to the National Institute on Aging, some successful practices of healthy aging include staying active, making healthy food choices, getting enough sleep, limiting your alcohol intake and proactively managing your health care. As a physician, I try my best to lead by example, but for me, my greatest inspiration and example of healthy aging is my mother. She is the matriarch of our family, bringing joy and love whenever she is around. We are beyond lucky to have her in our lives and not a day goes by where I am not inspired by her commitment to healthy aging. #HealthyAging
