Since June is #PrideMonth, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to discuss the importance of creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals and dive into some steps allies can take to normalize practices to foster supportive environments through the Young Minds Initiative. LGBTQ+ individuals — especially transgender and non-binary people — experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation than non-LGBTQ+ individuals. There are many different facets that contribute to mental health — from the common factors that affect all people, like school, work, news, socioeconomics, background, family, etc. to more specific elements, such as increased anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, not respecting a person’s pronouns, experiencing targeted bullying from peers at school, not having access to gender-affirming healthcare, and much more. All people are deserving of a safe space where they can be their authentic selves and talk about their #mentalhealth. I invite you to read my most recent blog post, “Celebrating Pride: Fostering Safe Spaces for LGBTQ+ Folx” below! https://lnkd.in/gYnPhG-5

Helping social changemakers deepen their impact for a kinder, more equitable world | CEO at Javelina | Host of How to Change the World Podcast | Public Speaker
“More people say they have seen a ghost than know a trans person. When you don't know people, it's easy to demonize them.” 🌈 At the Emmy Awards on Monday, GLAAD, an incredible advocacy organization for the LGBTQ+ community, was honored with the Governor's Award 🏆 The acceptance speech from Sarah Kate Ellis struck a real chord with me, underlining the crucial role that stories play in creating change in this world. She said: “Visibility creates understanding, understanding opens doors." To me, this highlights the transformative power of stories in shaping perceptions and fostering empathy. Sarah Kate continued: “TV directly influences how we treat each other and the decisions we make in our living rooms, schools, at work, and at the ballot box.” She’s right. The stories we consume - and tell - have a profound impact on our perspectives. So, here's a twofold call to action: 1️⃣ Reflect on the stories you consume. Can you explore a movie, TV show or social media influencer that shares lived experience that’s different from your own? Let's broaden our horizons and embrace the richness of diverse narratives. 2️⃣ Social change leaders – let's dive deeper into storytelling in our communications. How can we tell the stories of those we serve? How can we empower them to share their own experiences, shaping narratives that inspire understanding and change? I'm putting together some tangible steps to make this actionable, so stay tuned! 🚀📝 Let's amplify the voices that need to be heard 🗣️ #storytelling #socialchange #emmyawards

Delighted to publish this new resource today from our latest No Barriers Here study. It doesn’t have all the answers, nor does it collectively represent all LGBTQ+ people, but it does invite us to consider and reflect on the care that we provide or commission. This way we can move in the right direction towards making positive change to equitable #palliativecare. #research #peolc #LGBTQ+ #equity https://lnkd.in/ezMhm3Cy
“The sense of uncertainty and vulnerability that this position can bring might even stop us from seeking medical help at all.” Do you work at individual, organisational or leadership level? Do you provide care or commission services? Do you want to provide safer, more equitable #PalliativeCare? Take a look at our new co-produced resource, published today. ‘It’s more than rainbows in receptions’ - Working with LGBTQ+ People in Palliative and End-of-Life Care.
