It’s Not Rocket Science--It's Harder! You need to innovate more. We’ll fund materials, but you can figure out general operations. To my fellow NPOs: Have you been on the receiving end of these types of responses in your quest for financial sustainability? What happens when you have already innovated, and the innovation is working? Should NPOs have to innovate for the sake of innovation just to find funding? When I embarked upon the nonprofit world seven years ago, this was all new to me. I wasn’t jaded as I worked to pull all the pieces together to bring OneHeart to life. I was a bit “Pollyanna” in my approach, operating the entire project like an actual business, as opposed to a passion. Now my team and I are working hard toward sustainability so we can continue to help people transform their lives for years to come. And now I understand. You may have heard the saying: “It’s not rocket science.” I agree. Human services is so much more difficult, truth be told. In traditional science/engineering, problems are reduced to equations that derive solutions. But with people-engineering it’s a totally different game. Reason #1: People are not formulaic or easily solved. Those served at OneHeart come to us with family struggles, debt, unreliable transportation, inability to pay for childcare, trauma, substance abuse challenges, and job and personal histories that make it difficult to gain employment. Think about the obligations you need to meet to sustain your life. Now, imagine that layered with inability to cope with trauma, piles of debt, low earning potential, or childcare and transportation challenges. It quickly becomes a living hell and there is no perfect formula to solve these things. Reason #2: The need to chase dollars for sustainability often leads to mission creep. NPO leaders are sometimes forced to start new programming just to attract the dollars that help them continue operating in some way. NPOs are considered charities, so all resources should either be donated or done on the cheap according to prevailing opinion. We have to beg, hunt, and flip over couch cushions on the regular for the sake of survival. Reason #3: Rocket science would logically conclude human services is incredibly difficult work. It would pay people well so they can provide for their own lives as they work to serve others. Due to fundraising challenges, NPOs often have to take an upside-down approach to staffing, often paying crisis wages to people whose job it is to help other people get out of crisis. Right?! Like attracts like, so wouldn’t that mean direct service employees in crisis will only lead to more of the same? We took a different approach at OneHeart. Does that make it significantly more difficult to fund? Most definitely. But if we didn’t have happy, well-provided-for employees driving our work, the whole model would fall apart and I believe people deserve to discover what they are capable of and build better lives.

Co-Founder, Global Citizen | Author of “From Ideas to Impact” (Wiley: April 2024) | Speaker, Board Member and Forbes.com Contributor
Forbes has documented the competition between Musk and Jeff Bezos for the title of "World's Richest Man," yet it's Musk's philanthropic actions, or the perceived lack thereof, that have come under increased scrutiny, especially in light of his comments on MacKenzie Scott’s generous giving. In an era where technological advancements and wealth accumulation soar, the true measure of impact lies in the ability to address and alleviate global challenges. With a foundation harboring $7 billion in assets, Musk stands at a crossroads where his decisions could significantly influence global issues like energy poverty and technological access. My latest articles proposes two approaches for Musk to not only leverage his philanthropic footprint but also respond to critics with actions: Direct Contributions to Combat Energy Poverty: With over 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa without electricity, a substantial investment from Musk could support efforts to bring sustainable energy to millions, fostering greater participation in the technological revolution. Empowering Nonprofits to Drive Policy Change: A strategic move by Musk to fund advocacy efforts can enable crucial policy shifts, increasing aid and support for global development initiatives. Musk’s potential pivot towards a more effective form of philanthropy could not only redefine his legacy but also demonstrate the power of wealth when channeled towards humanity's collective advancement.
