Five Weeks of Transformation: Inside the RBC Women’s Advisory Programme Last week we wrapped up five weeks of upskilling the young women of RBC’s Capital Markets Women’s Advisory Programme through a tailored combination of simulations and workshops. The Programme is designed to help first-year university women - all relative finance novices - build the knowledge, experience, and confidence required to land a place in their summer internships and beyond. RBC's Early Careers Team turned to AmplifyME to develop a solution to enhance participants’ skills, while simultaneously assessing their specific skills and progress. ▶ **A tailored programme** A customised programme of practical, immersive markets and banking simulations, alongside commercial acumen and soft skills training ▶ **Immersive, hands-on approach** Participants experienced roles from Junior Investment Banking Analysts to Traders to ESG Investment Managers ▶ **Incremental learning and development** We set the difficulty levels to deliberately build across the length of the programme ▶ **In-depth candidate reporting** We share individual candidate performance data highlighting strengths and weaknesses with the Early Careers Team Marc Anthony Caporiccio, Global Head of Diversity Recruitment, said: "The young women transformed in front of our eyes, and by week five were equipped with sharpened skills, heightened confidence, and a well-rounded perspective to boost their prospects and level the playing field. My final year project was a financial analysis of the house builder Persimmon Plc, graded at 84%. Narrowing down the topics I wanted to study further was challenging, but the diverse resources at LUBS helped me identify my passions and strengths. By exploring various first-year modules and engaging in relevant societies, I discovered potential finance career paths. The LUBS mentoring scheme was pivotal, offering invaluable insights into university life and the finance industry from a seasoned professional. This guidance shaped my career aspirations and prepared me for real-world challenges. To fellow students, my advice is: stay curious. Yesterday, we kicked off the first of five simulation experiences to upskill the talented young women of RBC Capital Markets Women’s Advisory Programme! 🔎 The Programme Open to first-year university women with minimal exposure to finance or the corporate world, this programme aims to bridge the gap in understanding different roles, building commercial acumen, and boosting confidence.   🎯 RBC’s Challenge for AmplifyME RBC's Early Careers Team sought a partner to deliver upskilling across three global locations, enhancing participants' knowledge, abilities, and preparedness for internships and full-time roles. 4 KEY 🔑 lessons I learned at my first job in Goldman Sachs that have shaped the way I lead my company today. 9 years ago, as a fresh-faced college graduate armed with a degree in Economics and Philosophy, I stepped into the corporate world, thinking I was ready for anything. Little did I know, my first job at Goldman Sachs would reshape my entire perspective on work and life. Here's a breakdown of the pivotal lessons I learned that still guide me as the founder of Ascend Now: Talk less. Do more. In the world of academia, I was trained to meet word counts. But in the corridors of Goldman Sachs, I learned that results speak volumes and paragraphs, much more than complex sentences can. A well-crafted presentation often said more than a thousand words could. Its Ok to give yourself time. Someone once told me “The expert in anything was once a beginner”, which couldn’t be more true. Learning to be patient with myself while striving to ease my colleagues' workload was a balancing act I mastered over time. Give yourself the permission to slow down and focus. Embrace the unanticipated situations. I remember being asked to deliver a bolt-on acquisition pitch one morning because my colleague couldn’t make it on time. I was completely unprepared, but got a hold of my nerves and ended up giving one of the best presentations of my life. The point is to say “yes” to every opportunity when you’re starting out because you either win or you learn (aka win). Opportunities rarely present themselves on a platter.  You can surprise yourself. Who you work with > what you do  It’s been a long time since my time at GS, but the people I worked with still play an integral part in my life. From my mentor who taught me how to balance ambition without compromising my values, to my kind and motivating colleagues, one of whom sits on Ascend Now’s board today. The average person spends a third of their life at work, so choose people who make you want to show up, fight for them and learn from them. This interview reminded me of these important lessons that would serve me way past my time at GS and be a more effective colleague and working professional. I hope they’ll help you too. In 2023, we supported over 5,870 young people and offered 147 work experience opportunities. We delivered 10,289 hours of work experience and hosted inspirational career seminars for 5,483 children and young people. Our Corporate Advisory Board support with the development of career learning and pathways for the children served by Urban Synergy into employment through corporate insight days, job shadowing, internships, apprenticeships and other work experience. As we navigate Day 4 of #NAW2023, we spotlight an essential stretch on our "Superhighway to Good Jobs": the pivotal role of women in registered apprenticeships. In an era where representation matters more than ever, today we champion the unwavering spirit of women breaking barriers in nontraditional occupations. Apprenticeships not only offer women entry into traditionally male-dominated sectors, but they also challenge existing biases, shatter stereotypes, and set the stage for a more inclusive workspace. Why is this vital? Because many of these male-dominated roles come with higher pay scales than female-dominated counterparts. By stepping into these roles, women not only elevate their earnings but also embark on career paths filled with continuous training and growth opportunities. At SOLID, we resonate with findings suggesting that apprenticeships can play a significant part in bridging the gender pay gap. For most people, college is one of the most transformative periods in life. But for Taylor Weekes, what changed her most during her time as a student at Howard University was something that didn't happen in a dorm or a courtyard or even in a classroom. It took place on her computer screen in 2021, via video calls where the people looking back at her were leaders of one of Wall Street's most storied institutions. That's because Weekes participated in Goldman Sachs' first-ever HBCU Possibilities Program, a semester-long course for students at historically Black colleges and universities where freshman and sophomores learn the fundamentals of finance, are exposed to the ins and outs of Goldman, and work on a group project that's presented to top leaders at the firm for a chance to win $1,000,000 for their school. That was her sophomore year of college. Weekes landed an internship at the firm the next summer, in 2022, in the financial institutions group of the prestigious investment banking division. This past July, she started as a full-time analyst on that same team. "It was very helpful realizing that I can actually start a career here, I can actually work here, I can actually intern here," Weekes told Insider. "Because I see other people who look like me and who went to schools like the ones that I went to — who not only came to Goldman but have thrived here. It changed me, and I'm sure many others would say the same." The application for the 2024 program, which will take place from January to April, closes this week. To help applicants get a leg up and better understand the program and its potential benefits, Insider spoke to Weekes and another analyst who's an alumni of the program — Zachariah Christopher S., a Morehouse College grad on Goldman's healthcare team. Here's a breakdown of the key benefits. ••Empowerment and independent: financial tools like savings accounts and credit can help young people be more self-sufficient. This means they can save for things they need or want, like education or starting a business, With out relying on others. ••Financial security: financial inclusion can help young people wether unexpected financial storms. Having a safety net, even a small one, can make a big difference and reduce stress. •• Better financial decisions: when young people have access to financial services and financial literacy education, they are better equipped to make sound financial choices throughout their lives. This can help them avoid debt problems and plan for the future. Entrepreneurship: financial inclusion can be a real booster for young entrepreneurs. Having access to funding and financial tools can help them get their businesses off the ground. Financial inclusion is important, but it's not always easy for young people to access these financial services. There are a number of initiatives and programs working to address this challenge.
