The Munk Debates took over Roy Thompson Hall earlier this week. In the age of doom-scrolling, split-screen yelling matches and hot takes, this org does good work to keep substantive and civil debate alive and well. The format is refreshing: 2 vs. 2. One side arguing "pro", the other "con". As an audience, you vote on questions before the debate begins. One question stuck out: "are you open to changing your mind based on what is presented tonight?" . I love this question. I like how it reminds you to park your pre-determined opinions and be receptive to the info you are hearing. It reveals the potential swing vote in the room. We often ask a version of it when we facilitate executive teams / present strategy at the Board level ( "if you disagree, can you be convinced?" or "what would you need to be convinced?"). Help us strengthen the argument with - and get real feedback from - the swing vote in the room.

In the last 5 days I have seen this video. I have seen a video of a lady not allowed to vote because the poll closed at 1:30 instead of the 4:30 time posted. I have seen videos and new stories of confirmd fires/explosive devices used to damage ballot boxes in multiple states. I have seen court rulings forcing a state to scrub ballots from self-identifying non-citizens. I have seen media stories of 2500 ballots being caught which came in at the same time, with the same handwriting. People can deny fraud as long as they will, because they refuse to see it. It matters not how much nor which party. Any fraud is voter fraud. In a very tight race where the edge votes are counted in the hundreds, and those locations are well known, it doesn’t take a whole lot to orchestrate a rigged election. I am not saying that happened before or that it will happened this time. I am saying there are people committing fraud, no matter the scale nor the impact. We all need to have our eyes and minds open about this, if we are honest about protecting democracy. Requiring ID is simply common sense. It won’t solve all the problems because most fraud happens with mail-in, but if we want to not have these appearances of fraud, we might to use common sense.
