NYT article on the future of pediatrics- 6% drop in MDs choosing pediatrics will further reduce the number of pediatric sub-specialists, who are already in short supply. This article hits the usual considerations for MDs coming from pediatric residencies - money & training time. The pediatric medical team also includes another group - surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists, and psychiatrists who complete lengthy residencies focused almost entirely on adult medicine and THEN add on 1-2 year fellowships in pediatrics- spending longer in training and potentially earning less. If we hope to grow a resilient pediatric physician workforce, we should not neglect this pathway.
