So sad. Anatomy, ( including embryology, histology,) pathology and physiology form the basis of all diagnosis and thorough knowledge of which is necessary to make sense of the symptoms patients present with. That’s why the primary FRCS exam used to consist of anatomy, physiology and pathology parts only.

Medical student orthopedic rotations are in full swing. This week in the operating room,. I asked a few questions about basic anatomy, and unfortunately, the student didn’t get some of them correct. After the case, the student asked, “What can I do to improve?” I emphasized the importance of knowing anatomy and preparing for cases. The student, looking puzzled, asked again, “Yeah, but really, what do I need to do to improve as a medical student?” I believe we need to focus on the basics when teaching medical students. It’s hard to teach orthopedic surgery without a solid understanding of anatomy. When teaching medical students interested in orthopedics, I try to focus on instilling a strong foundation in anatomy, encouraging thorough preparation for each case, being a team player, and fostering a mindset of continuous learning and curiosity. Every UK surgeon/ trainee must watch this. A Non-Surgeon has been performing complex gallbladder surgery. I explain in detail in my video @DrMishMash the published scope of work for Surgical Care Practitioners by The Royal College of Surgeons of England. They only need 18 months of post registration experience and then 24 months RCS accredited masters. But what is deeply concerning is the ambiguity in roles and limitations. Watch and find out. I hope you share this to every colleagye because a press release and professional release on this is needed with countless SCP roles being currently advertised. Ofcourse this role, is invaluable and this is not a post to undermine the input of a MDT approach but there are concerns around qualification, regulation, patient safety and accountability. Most of all, a public consultation is needed first, and a framework to educate the public about this role and acceptability of a non-surgeon operting, as with this case of gallbladder surgery. Personally, this role often less paid than surgeons, should not counter staff shortages, instead funding in more training posts and surgical trainees and surgeons which may be by recruitment from other healthcare professionals into formal training is what is needed.
