Happy Pride!! This year, my family is celebrating by welcoming our brand new daughter, a Pride baby, born on June 11! Until last decade, my family was not possible. I am married to my husband, because gay marriage is protected under the Constitution. Our daughter was conceived using an egg donor and IVF, because the law protects that miracle of science that helps so many families, straight and gay alike. A wonderful and giving surrogate carried our daughter and gave birth to her, because the law protects surrogacy. And as a result, we are now life-long friends with the two moms who helped us become dads, when our surrogate and her wife selflessly decided to help another LGBTQ+ family have a child. We cannot take these hard-fought rights for granted. The law can be a force for justice and equality. But as we have seen, the law can be changed, and it can just as easily be used to suppress these virtues. There are many who are blinded to the joy and love that these legal protections bring to LGBTQ+ families, and they instead seek to dismantle them for their own narrow-minded aims. The preservation of these rights depends on vigilance and visibility. The battle to defend them is not an abstract, academic debate. These laws have real consequences for real families, including our own. And, the LGBTQ+ community depends on its allies to stand strong with them to defend these protections. So, this year, I wanted to share our story and a photo of our new family! Ten years from now, I want to make sure a family like ours is still possible, so that other LGBTQ+ families get to experience this same happiness. #pride #gayrights #lgbtrights #gaypride
