A few weeks ago I was invited to participate in a webinar with Sarah Jenner and Mindful Employer to talk about building and engaging effectives teams. As our conversation went on, we touched on how to support team members who are navigating health care systems as patients and caregivers. A key element of this includes ensuring that team members feel seen and heard as well as set up for success in their roles. Reflecting on an inspiring day at the Institute of Government & Public Policy Health & Wellbeing in the workplace conference yesterday! Fuelled by inspiration, Katie Waldron and I turned ideas into action and went straight into an impromptu planning session in the costa next door. In a great gathering of minds, one key theme resonated: the paramount importance of placing the voice of the employee at the core of all business decisions. The realisation that organisational success is intricately linked to a culture that values and respects the unique perspectives and contributions of every individual. The intersection of DE&I with well-being emerged as a key theme, underlining the notion that holistic employee wellbeing encompasses not only physical and mental health but also an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and celebrated. Fostering a culture of belonging and support is not just a moral imperative but a strategic advantage in driving innovation and productivity. An intriguing insight for me was the recognition of the generational diversity within our workforce, with five generations coexisting in today's professional world. This realisation sparked ideas for me on how we can effectively address and cater to the unique needs, preferences, and perspectives of each generation, fostering intergenerational collaboration and understanding. Another pressing issue brought to light for us was the staggering number of women who suffer in silence; with over 1 million women resorting to secretive sick leave due to menstrual health challenges. This revelation underlined the prominent need to de-stigmatise conversations around women's health in the workplace. Above all, the resounding message that reverberated throughout the conference was the profound impact of every conversation. These 2 days in Manchester served as an amazing opportunity for Katie and me to engage in some much-needed team building. We ate well, we exercised & we laughed until we cried (MAFs is a great show, you cannot tell me otherwise & I highly recommend watching together for team building) but the shared experience of exploring new ideas and creating solutions strengthened our bond & empowered our collaborative spirit. During Novo Health Week, we launched an affirmation board to foster a healthy workplace culture, encouraging employees to recognize and appreciate each other’s contributions. We introduced affirmation cards for colleagues to express their gratitude for each other’s presence and collaboration at our affiliate, and email templates for field-based colleagues to do the same. The engagement was outstanding! Employees enthusiastically shared heartfelt appreciation both on cards and via email, demonstrating the strong culture of gratitude within our organization. Creating an environment of mutual support and appreciation is essential for a #healthyworkplaceculture. Recognizing everyone’s efforts fosters both personal and professional growth.
