When Council’s request a High Pedestrian Activity area (HPA) one of the first questions people often ask is, what is the point? I think this example from New Zealand says it best in that is creates a Safer Speed Area. The statistics show a HPA of 30 or 40km/h not only reduces casualty crashes, but doubles the reduction compared to an ordinary permanent speed zone of the same speed. Likewise, this crash reduction factor improves over time after implementation, from 7% at 12 months through to 22% after 5 years. So, even where existing speeds are close to or below the proposed HPA limit, there are still huge safety benefits to be had. Overall, this has a positive impact on amenity and walkability, especially for those most vulnerable within our community, promoting and enabling more active and healthier lifestyles.

Everyone agrees about the main problem with London. It's 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. 🧽 In fact, according to experts, it's only 22% spongy. And - while this sounds like a joke - sponginess could be the key to creating a climate resilient city. Any Londoner who witness the 2021 flash floods might grasp this concept instinctively: The city needs to act like a sponge: absorbing, storing and managing stormwater. You know what isn't spongy? • Hard roads and roofs • Lack of green spaces • Aging drainage systems    And so on - you get the picture. What I like about this sponge city concept is the huge range of other benefits that getting spongier will bring: • Better air quality • Improved water quality • More green and blue spaces, which are great for mental health and wellbeing as well as biodiversity, reducing the urban heat island effect and many more benefits. This is the product of a half hour’s worth of clean up down at my local beach today. A beach that, when I first arrived, didn’t look like it had too much litter around. And if you think this doesn’t look like much of a pile, zoom in - plenty of microplastics amongst it. All across the country, people have given up their time to clean up our places and spaces - helping not only to make them look a little nicer but to protect the precious natural environment we have the privilege of living in. While it would certainly be nice to live in a litter-free community where this sort of day isn’t needed, it’s always heart-warming to see how many workplaces, schools, community groups and individuals roll up their sleeves and support Clean Up Australia Day. Thank you, Clean Up Australia Ltd, for all the hard work that goes into hosting the day each year. Thank you to all those who put their hand up to coordinate events, and thank you to Councils and all others involved in supporting local communities to get on board. Miss the memo about this event?
