And it’s essential to be authentic.” –Chris Anderson, “TED Talks” We all have situations where we are vulnerable. We might prefer to hide from the crowd instead of give the monthly sales talk. (Yes, I realize people don’t like public speaking.) In those monthly sales talks, it could help to build in an analogy to something you enjoy (baseball, coffee, Broadway plays). Adding the analogy adds to your comfort and shows your authenticity. In my earlier days of a previous job, there was a call-out for employees to teach others about their areas of expertise. One friend explained the best practices of iCloud, and I decided to offer a tasting class of hot sauce. (This was mid-2017, so the YouTube show Hot Ones was in its third season. I hadn’t yet heard of the show, so the timing was purely coincidental.) I was afraid of public speaking, so offering the tasting class was my place of comfort, confidence, and authenticity. Most of the attendees were happy with the class, although not everyone could stomach the spicier sauces.  (I re-offered the class in 2019.) About a month ago, I hit my vulnerable spot when I bit into chicken tenders with a sauce so hot, a waiver had to be signed prior to consumption. I ended up eating those tenders for three days. While I showed my vulnerable side (with mistakenly thinking the spiciness would leave—and they didn’t), I reminded myself I don’t quit (and finished the tenders on a Tuesday). Help was from a sage coworker who provided papaya extract (much better than Pepto Bismol could ever do) and surprise—sour cream. My authenticity of not quitting received wide-eyed looks from coworkers. My confidence definitely took a hit, so remaining authentic and fighting the pain was part of the end goal. #matthewsbooknotes #notquiteatedtalk #tedtalks #hotsauce #hotones

Some interesting echoes of Sir John Hegarty's MAD//FEST LONDON talk yesterday in Sir Martin Sorrell's talk today. Asked what he’d recommend to youngsters joining the industry Sir Martin said learn Chinese, Spanish and coding – not just because they’re useful skills, but because it’ll exercise your brain in a way that we don’t do enough of now. Whilst Sir Martin Sorrell also talked about trying tech fast, because it will change faster than you think, Rory Sutherland talked about what slow AI might look like. Sometimes we need to take time to do things, we need to put in the right amount of effort to achieve what we need to. Being more efficient can be easy to achieve, being more effective is often much harder. Thanks MAD//FEST – lots of great thinking to make the little grey cells fire up – now to slowly digest and think about the learnings to take forward.
