One of Cure SMA’s top priorities is the relay the SMA community’s treatment experiences and preferences to the United States Food and Drug administration. Below is the 2022 Cure SMA Risk/Benefit Survey results. In 2022, people with SMA and their caregivers were asked how willing they were to live with certain possible treatment risks in exchange for certain potential treatment benefits. This was then compared to results from a similar 2017 survey. In case you missed it, an over-the-counter continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system was just approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). https://buff.ly/4c6sYHX The device, made by Dexcom and called Stelo, would allow anyone interested in their blood sugar levels to get one without a prescription. CGMs offer real-time data on a person’s blood sugar levels, aiding in the understanding of how different foods, activities, and lifestyle factors affect a person’s glucose levels. Athletes, pre-diabetics, those with a family history of diabetes, or those using fasting, or “biohacking” are all considered potential markets for over-the-counter CGMs. There is no alert mechanism for high or low blood sugars, so it is not for those at medical risk of hypoglycemia or serious blood sugar spikes. Will you get one? I’m on the fence. Cost estimates are about $90 a month. 📍 Recent warning from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding a rare but serious drug reaction with the anticonvulsants lotiracetam and clobazam: ✔️ Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that the anticonvulsants lotirastam (Keppra, Keppra XR, Elepsia XR, Spritam) and clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) can cause a rare but serious reaction that goes undiagnosed. And quick treatment can be life threatening. This reaction is called "drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms" (DRESS). This reaction may start as a rash, but it can progress quickly and lead to damage to internal organs, the need for hospitalization, and even death. ✅ FDA.gov
