This Thursday, Sept 26, students are invited to visit Case Western Reserve University to engage in CAED Associate Professor Dr. Rui Liu's seminar "Intelligent Design and Construction for Building Structures and Infrastructure" from 4:00pm - 5:00pm. Associate Professor of Structures, Kent State University CAED Visiting Associate Professor, Case Western Reserve University Intelligent Design and Construction for Building Structures and Infrastructure The complex interactions between the natural environment and humans have depleted natural resources, degraded the environment, and changed the climate. To address these challenges, professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) need to create a safe, durable, and elegant structure or infrastructure, disciplined by conservation of materials and costs. AEC professionals make decisions, employing mathematical theories tempered with empirical evidence and using engineering judgment to deal with uncertainties. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies have inspired designers and engineers to explore how these technologies augment their capacities in decision making and evaluate AI applications and impacts on the AEC industry. These technologies will significantly change future professional practices. The seminar presents several innovative uses of sustainable materials in creative structural design and novel computational construction, demonstrating intelligent design and construction principles. It also discusses how emerging technologies can accelerate the learning from nature to identify the physical laws for resilient systems built with sustainable materials and efficient construction methods. #kentstate #caed #lecture

The 7th Symposium on Formal Methods in Architecture (7FMA) aims to contribute to the discussion in architecture and urbanism on the application of new formal methods to emerging social and technical issues. The focus will be on methodological advances based on recent developments in collaboration with mathematics and computer science, applied to architecture and urbanism at different levels of abstraction and formalization. The 7FMA will focus on the connection between formal methods and architectural practice. With the proliferation of digital technologies, which every day allow increasingly intelligent tasks to be delegated to automated tools and have immense potential to increase productivity, it is urgent to examine the gap that often exists between scientific endeavours and practical applications in everyday architectural work. We invite the submission of research proposals that enhance and advance these and related themes using novel or established methodologies, case studies, theoretical and historical perspectives, analytical experiments, and other methods. Fresh from the press: Our latest research has been featured in the International Journal of Architectural Computing. Building upon our prior research in sustainable design, this paper explores the innovative application of algorithms to facilitate the integration of reclaimed elements in a case study from Oslo, Norway. 🌲🏡♻ The video illustrates how matching algorithms are applied to assign available reclaimed elements to new structures, enhancing both the effectiveness and practicality of the process. Moreover, we have augmented our models with detailed scans of these materials, which enriches the dataset and strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration. I am super excited to share my recently published article titled "Development of immersive bridge digital twin platform to facilitate bridge damage assessment and asset model updates" in the highly prestigious journal Computers in Industry (IF: 8.2, Cite Score: 18.9, Top 2% of world journals). This paper is a major extract from my PhD research, showcasing the significant outcomes of my work. The study presents the Immersive Bridge #Digital_Twin Platform (#IBDTP), a tool that automates Structural Health Monitoring (#SHM) processes for bridges. It uses #Scan_to_BIM and #Augmented_Reality technologies, and a #3D_Game_Engine. Tested on a single-span concrete arch bridge in #Poland, the IBDTP improves infrastructure managers' accessibility to major damage data, enabling better planning for future interventions. The developed immersive digital twin platform for bridges represents a cutting-edge approach to improving bridge damage assessment and updating asset models, providing an innovative solution for the infrastructure industry. This work presents the stronger collaborative ties between the Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Hungary), and The University of British Columbia (Canada). NEWS: Morgan State University is planning to break ground in early 2024 on the $342 million Science and Research Complex in Baltimore. Designed by Moody Nolan in association with CannonDesign and K. Dixon Architecture, the 246,000-gsf facility will provide next-generation environments for programs in biology and chemistry. The eight-story structure will advance the university’s commitment to attaining R1 classification with collaborative research venues, a center for remote and hybrid technology, a 3,000-sf rooftop greenhouse, and labs for information technology and computer science. Interactive learning environments will foster student engagement, with numerous tutoring and support centers to optimize academic outcomes. Accommodating the School of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, the complex will house the dean’s office, flexible meeting rooms, and areas for informal interaction. The sustainably designed project is targeting #LEED Gold certification. Our latest study, published in Cell Press iScience, reveals some surprising turns in ventilation history—and new thermoregulation insights for architecture today https://lnkd.in/exFNWUKy In this post [1/6] I’ll highlight the interdisciplinary process ➡ Year 1. Make friends with a brilliant architectural historian (Annmarie Adams). Argue about how an old ventilation system actually worked (Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital, 1893). Start archival detective work, taking Annmarie’s lead. ➡ Year 2. Do some physical flow simulations (with then grad student Alexis Deleporte) to explore a hypothesis. (Could this really be 19th-century precursor to modern heat recovery?!) ➡ Year 3. More physical flow simulations. More archival detective work.  ➡ Year 4. Get funding. Convince brilliant PhD candidate Anna Halepaska to join the project. Teach a graduate seminar on the topic of environmental design history as an excuse to read everything written about 19th century ventilation. Now the archival work and fluid mechanics theory gets more serious.  ➡ Year 5. Do another physical flow simulation, this time with a fancy Background Oriented Schlieren system. Finish the math, generalize the scheme, and explore potential applications. More archival work. Trace the concept back to the 1860s (the Centre Block of the Old Parliamentary Complex in Ottawa!) ➡ Year 6. Painstakingly co-author the paper. Test different journals to find the right home. Hey presto! Easy, huh? Just as the diagram below suggests. The best bit was working together with Annmarie, Anna, and several others, along the way. Countless conversations. So many dead ends. Discoveries are best shared.
