Today we remember Waffle House, Inc. CEO and Georgia Tech alum Walter Ehmer. After graduating from Tech in 1989, Ehmer began at Waffle House in 1992. He remained a dear friend to the Institute throughout his career.
In keeping with my OMSA journey, an interesting tidbit is that FEMA uses Waffle House's operating status as an indicator for disaster response (at least, unofficially) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index
One of the finest souls I ever met! A few years ago, I invited Walt to have breakfast with my son and me at the Tech Waffle House. My son had graduated from the Institute a few years prior. I asked Walt to share perspective on leadership and life with my son like he was talking to a 28 year old version of himself. I will never forget that morning as long as I live and the lessons he provided with deep humility and genuineness in every word. My son won't either. I was in total awe as I watched him engage a host of learnings with my son asking many questions with the knowledge that true wisdom would come in Walt's sincere responses. Their souls connected that morning. The learnings were unforgettable. One hour turned into three. There are no words to capture my deep admiration and thankfulness. Walt's example will be a benchmark for my son for the rest of his life - and in mine as well. For those of us who love the Institute deeply, I believe that the best definition of a Ramblin Wreck from Georgia Tech is defined in Walt Ehmer. We should begin each day striving to live his example. The ripples from Walt's special life will last for generations in countless souls.
Ate my first WH breakfast in Kentucky in 1985 on my move from North Dakota to Atlanta! I remain a loyal WH diner! Open late, durung ice storms and power outages! It’s an institution!
Walt gave the most graceful humble acceptance speech humanly possible when he was given a lifetime achievement award by the GT foundation. In short, he told the audience how grateful he was for his rich life, family, faith, Waffle House career and of course said he could not have done it without his GT degree and friends. I can’t do it justice but he made everyone tear up. A life well led and God will welcome him with open arms
Walt was always so kind to me and everyone he encountered. He had an infectious smile and was so hard-working. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kara and the family. Walt, you will be missed, my friend!
Wow! That’s great Georgia Tech. Your Technology Square is impressive - so much so that we’re building an Aggie Square here in Sacramento. Aggie is for the UC Davis Aggies.
“…helluva, helluva, helluva an engineer!” We’ll miss you, Walt!
Ever notice that all Waffle Houses are yellow & Black? Same colors as a yellow jacket.

1moWe lost a truly wonderful human being way too early to the same terrible disease that took Steve Jobs and countless others. God Bless you, Walt. You fought the good fight and never lost your passion for serving and inspiring others all the way to the end. You are a shining light to everyone who had the honor of knowing you.
