Seriously, let's put an end to passive-aggressive behaviour and get better at being supportive and inclusive. Here's how I went from feeling inspired to bewildered all within 72 hours. Last week I was the MC at a two-day Women in Leadership Summit in Melbourne - one of the most inspiring events I've been to in some time. There was so much energy in the room, not only from the epic speakers but also from the wonderful delegates who showed up ready to learn and share. There was a strong feeling of inclusion and I came away from the summit feeling great about just how far women have come at lifting and supporting each other and bringing men on the journey as allies too. When I arrived home from Melbourne, I was on an absolute high, sharing what I'd learned and my feelings of exhilaration with my daughters and a few close friends (and of course through a few posts here on LinkedIn). On Friday, I caught up with some friends at a local hangout and was introduced to someone who happened to be chatting with a friend in our group. Anyone who knows me knows that I love meeting new people and am very open to welcoming others in. However, this person then strategically placed herself between me and my friend, with her back to me, in what I call a subtle micro-aggression that creates exclusion. Was it deliberate? I questioned myself.... maybe I was falling into a thinking trap! With a spirit of generosity, I'd like to say that perhaps they didn't realise, but in reality, I could sense it was intentional. I chose to ignore it and continued chatting with the rest of our group. I know it says more about them than it does about me. Then this person proceeded to whisper gossip about someone else who was present in our group. It was inappropriate, unkind, and unfair and the person receiving the gossip wasn't quite sure how to handle it in that moment, so (much to their regret later) they listened politely and said nothing. I'm pretty candid, so generally, I'd address it immediately, but this wasn't the right moment. I understand that people who behave this way often feel the need for significance, so they try to compete or bring others down. To feel better about themselves. Women's competitiveness is not a new issue. It's been around as long as women have worked together. I've seen and experienced firsthand how uncivil some women (and men) can be toward others. Sometimes it's based on tenure, appearance, experience, age, or a perceived threat to them. My point? We need to continue to break this cycle of exclusivity and superiority and instead create an inclusive, supportive, and #psychologicalsafe space for all whether that's at work or a social setting. My favourite quote is 'a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.' I'll be bringing that sentiment as I celebrate International Women's Day 2024. As I look at the landscape of leadership today, I can't help but reflect on how often women still find themselves sidelined from key opportunities. This not only impacts their immediate career prospects, but it also sends a message to young professionals that they may not have what it takes to lead. As a result, our pipeline of future female leaders risks shrinking. This is why allies in the workplace have never been more critical. Change doesn’t happen by chance. It requires intention. It requires action. And it requires all of us who believe in creating a more equitable, inclusive workplace to step up and play our part. So, what can you do right now to make a difference? 1- Amplify Women’s Voices in Meetings: If you notice a woman being interrupted or her ideas overlooked, speak up. A simple, “I’d love to hear [Name] finish her thought,” or “Let’s circle back to [Name]’s point,” can make all the difference. This not only ensures that women’s contributions are heard, but also sets a tone that their voices matter. 2- Create Opportunities for Women: Don’t wait for a woman to ask for a chance to shine. Advocate for her. Recommend female colleagues for high-visibility projects. Publicly acknowledging their strengths and potential builds their confidence and changes the way others perceive their leadership capabilities. Real change begins with small, intentional steps. 🎤 How Can Women Find Their Inner Balance in the Corporate World? Yesterday, I had the privilege to participate in a panel discussion on a topic that resonates deeply with me after nearly 30 years in the corporate race. Here's what I shared: 1️⃣ Flexibility is Key: The shift to remote work during COVID was transformative. Flexible work environments have become essential, not just for women but for all employees. Organizations offering flexibility see it as a critical part of their Employee Value Proposition. 2️⃣ Aligning Purpose and Values: Companies must help their teams find their Ikigai—their true purpose. Recruitment and role alignment should go beyond technical skills to match individual purpose with organizational values. And it’s time for companies to walk the talk on values displayed on their websites. 3️⃣ Invest in Development: Leadership programs, coaching, and learning opportunities are critical to breaking monotony, fueling engagement, and fostering growth. 4️⃣ Support Systems Matter: Personally, my balance has been sustained by my strong support system. Having someone like Saroj for the last 24 years, my children’s nanny, has been invaluable for my peace of mind. 5️⃣ Self-Awareness is Key: Knowing what nourishes me, aligning with my purpose, and regularly reassessing my needs keeps me grounded. Self-awareness is a constant work in progress, but it’s essential for thriving in the corporate world. 6️⃣ Gratitude and Authenticity: I’ve learned to practice gratitude, love what I have, and prioritize authenticity. I don’t define myself solely by my career but as someone seeking peace, balance, and fulfillment in all aspects of life. The path to balance isn’t always smooth, but with self-awareness, a supportive environment, and a focus on what truly matters, it’s possible to thrive while staying true to oneself. The truth about women in leadership? They’re often held to a higher standard. The expectations are different. The pressure is real. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In 2010, I watched a brilliant woman lead a team through a crisis, only to be criticized for not being "approachable enough." In 2013, another woman was praised for her achievements but told to “tone it down” so others wouldn’t feel intimidated. In 2017, I met a woman CEO who had to work twice as hard to be taken half as seriously as her male peers. In 2020, I spoke to a female executive who consistently outperformed her colleagues, yet her “style” was always questioned. In 2023, we’re still facing these same double standards. Let’s challenge this. Let’s hold ourselves accountable to change the narrative. It’s time for equitable standards—where performance, not bias, defines success. P.S. Start the conversation.
